Wow- where was that coming from?? What other construction is going on, especially on that side?

One of the buildings immediately to the west on Sutter, between Stockton and Powell. I noticed the demo crews hanging out on the street Friday evening, but didn't really check it out, so no idea how long it will be going on.

Try to get higher floor above 15+,
Even though I was in 19th floor with windows closed, I heard sirens
Did not get Union Square view, but there is construction going on as other Flyertalk member mentioned

Ive heard sirens on the Club floors (30+). No matter how high, you're going to hear them at any hotel. At least its not the idiot sax player that plays down at the embarcadero.

Absolutely horrific construction noise which started at 4:30AM (!!!) about one week ago during my last stay. It was unbearable to go back to sleep.

In hindsight I now understand the addition of ear plugs to the bathroom amenities.

I was on one of the highest floors, in a large suite, facing west.

+1000

The normal big city street noises you get downtown are IMO much less annoying than the noises you get at the HR Embarcadero from the people who live/drink in Justin Herman Plaza.

He moves around, but yes he loves to sit there and blast the same song over and over again right there. I heard him about 6 months ago across the street from the GH and nearly crapped myself thinking Id have to listen to that all evening. He moved on luckily.

Area safety?

How safe is it for a woman to walk from the Grand Hyatt SFO to the area around Moscone Center in early morning or during the evening?

The reason I ask is that in another thread ( San Francisco Hyatt Recommendation ) there was a recent - and rather heated - discussion about whether or not the hotel was situated in a "scummy" area.

I've stayed at the hotel in the past, but I've never had to deal with going to the Convention Center area on a daily basis. Is it reasonably safe to walk alone at night or will I have to take taxis?

I would say that if you be a bit smart about it you will have no problem whatsoever.... That it looks a bit "scummy" doesn't really make it dangerous. And your route avoids the less desirable areas anyway.

people act like this hotel is smack dab in the middle of the tenderloin - which it isn't.

The area to the east of 4th street, i.e., the entire route from Moscone to the GH, is considered "safe" by SF standards.

Nor is the GH's location any more "scummy" than any other part of Union Square, the Financial District, or Embarcadero. SF has a large population of street people and you will find them in all touristed SF neighborhoods.

Whether a single woman should walk solo from Moscone to the GH after dark is really a personal call. The risk of any trouble is very small, but sad to say that in most major US cities it is higher than zero.

It's a good area, so no concerns. Is very close but not in the Tenderloin. Also, I can confirm that there's a lot of Union Square area construction.

It's reasonably safe; you'll be staying on the "better neighborhood" side of the hotel in any case. (But I don't think you mean "SFO" which is not walking distance.)

It's close enough, the Tenderlon starts just south of Geary and west of Grant Avenue, where Macy's is. It's less than a 5 minute walk from the Hyatt. Addtioanlly, at night Market Street is just as bad... as the shoppers disappear the really freaky freaks come out. You need to be street smart any where you travel in SF, crime does not limit itself to the Tenderloin. I lived in SF for over 35 years, I've been robbed right in front of the Hyatt Regency 9:00 PM at night and pick pocketed just a few steps from the grand hyatt at 3:00 in the afternoon.. Union Square is known for that, waiting for the light to turn green, someone bumps you and your wallet is gone. I've also had my car broken into in nob hill, Noe Valley and Pacific Heights, all high income neighborhoods.

I'm in the city right now attending a conference.
Last night at the Grand Hyatt at the Lounge OneUp... escorts were like bees on honey ... lot's of shady, scanky people around Union Sq and the Grand Hyatt... the closer you got to Market and 6th the worse it got. SF has really gone down hill, it's a toilet.

It's really sad the city I once loved I can't stand anymore because it has become so filthy. I feel safer in NYC than I do in San Francisco.

In the end like in any city you have to be street smart and you will be fine, what is most offensive in SF is the filth and homeless people laying all over the place.
