Could I check one thing, the 4 suite upgrades, can they only be used to upgrade from a suite booking to a further level or from a standard king room?
The suite upgrade upgrades any paid reservation made through Hyatt to a base level suite. You cannot pay for a suite and use the suite upgrade to upgrade to a "better" suite.

Thanks again for clarifying:-)

Couple of final queries, could I re clarify as our existing booking is through a travel agent, we won't receive any points for the cost of the accommodation?

Seems a bit harsh but there standard daily rate is over 40% more expensive and therefore the increased cost outweighs the points benefits but hey ho .

Would we receive points on our F&B?

Would we be entitled to any of the benefits for Diamond on the existing booking, wifi, any room upgrade, late checkout etc

Thanks for your patience

You can clarify as many times as you like, but the answer remains no.

Can't comment on that without knowing the nights/rates you're talking about...but we're rapidly getting off topic here...

If they are included as a benefit of the Expedia reservation, then no. If you are paying for them separately, then yes, provided that the hotel has your Hyatt Gold Passport number on file (you may need to point this out to them, as they may not have that information

Some you will be eligible for, some you will not.

I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the program Terms and Conditions, which explains things clearer and more authoritatively than I am able to.

You ought to consider whether you might be wasting your once-in-a-lifetime chance to do the Diamond Trial. Maybe in the future you might wish you had the chance to do it and may well regret having done it just for 10 breakfasts and possibly a better room.

However, you might also want to check whether your Japan stays can be turned into Points + Cash bookings. AFAIK, that would then make those stays eligible for using the Diamond Upgrade Certificates. In that case, free breakfast + suite upgrades might make the whole trip a lot more appealing...

The Diamond challenge is not a once-in-a-lifetime thing (anymore).

Although it's not quite intended for people staying on points.

Ahh the ability for the anon internet posting to generate dickish responses. Thank you for that thoughtful advice to my question whether the economic benefits of an investment generate a good return. I cherish your open spirit of community.

What is it you are looking for then....you will get a free breakfast at someting like $25-50 per person a night and the possibility of a better room and 4 (future) Diamond suite upgrades, all for free if you meet the criteria.

What more is there to do the math? It's an extremely generous offer, especially since it's "abused" so often.

If the rate is still available through 3rd party, you should look into seeing if the rate will work for a BEST RATE Guarantee, which matches the rate and gives a further discount, plus is an eligible rate to earn points and can be used with DSU.

As of now, it's a once a year chance to do the Diamond Trial, not once in a lifetime.

I say it's a no brainer to do it, given the incredible benefits offered to Diamonds at Hyatt hotels in Japan (especially the Park Hyatt)

Once a year? Really? Why ever bother reaching Diamond status the regular way? Just keep a competing chain status via a credit card, then every year do a Diamond Trial and stay the 12 nights.

If people have actually done it that way, well that's up to Hyatt to allow or not, but it seems unsustainable to me...

Technically once every promotional period, which happens to be a year.

Not my problem!

Although for some people, doing 12 nights in 60 days is more difficult than doing 25 stays/50 nights within a calendar year...

Back to the original question, everyone's favorite blogger chimed in on the issue today:

Hi,

Apologies as I'm a relative newbie to these parts. I'm very interested in obtaining Diamond status to benefit a 2.5 week trip to Asia in the summer of 2015. I start early! I've been searching around and can't find the answer to a couple of questions.

1. I plan to obtain Hilton gold status via its Citi Hilton Reserve card. Can I use a free night award from the Reserve to "count" as a stay to qualify for the Diamond Challenge? Or do I have to pay for a night at a Hilton to register sufficient activity in that account?

2. I'm aiming at the Park Hyatt Seoul and the Park Hyatt Tokyo in June (lousy time...I know...kids so no choice). If I register for the challenge in May, I can easily make the 12 nights, but worry there won't be any available suites by then. Should I try to qualify for the challenge sooner? I'd definitely have to do mattress runs.

Thanks!

This might work in the case of Hilton, as I don't think that their system differentiates between paid and award stays when listed in the account records you send to Hyatt.

If there is a Park Suite available for your dates, then you can use the Diamond Suite Upgrade, so you can confirm availability at any time. But the timing of starting the trial is a judgment call that you will have to make.
