It was fully refundable in the past -- perhaps they've changed the conditions for 2017.

I'm guessing it depends on properties? My Bangkok booking on HYVISA has a 48hrs cancellation policy.

Did you get credit for 2 or 3 nights?

I hear you.

I am starting to think that in 2016, Hyatt corporate made a decision to incent high revenue / profitability customers, and dis-incent gamers, hackers, and "devil customers".

Hence the significant upping of top tier qualification from 25 stays / 50 nights to 60 nights and the radical scaleback of promotions--and the improvement of benefits to those still standing who meet the more difficult thresholds.

Points purchase

I received an e-mail to purchase points, with a bonus of 30%, i.e. max 55'000 points plus 16'500 bonus points. I believe this is a targeted offer, as I need to log on before getting to the information.

but honestly... what's the incentive to buy points? Using them for award stays does not get you stay credit, I only do P+C or full cash stays, and I am seeing the P+C availability drop lately anyhow...

You already said it.... P+C or awards when that gets you a better price for the room and you don't care for the night credit. An award can sometimes be a great option when rates are high.
And don't forget suite/club upgrades, those can also be of significant value for some.

So it's a very personal choice.

I saw what's termed as mid-year sale a week ago when I was checking rates for Shanghai and Hangzhou. The mid-year rates for Shanghai were not all that attractive, only 60 RMB lower than Costco rate which is refundable. Rates for Hanzhou HR and PH are real savings, especially HR Hangzhou rates are ~910 RMB for mid-year sale vs 1300+ RMB without.
