Thank goodness i booked Hilton Vilamoura 2 weeks ago before the new slider was introduced
Booked 5 nights end of June on points for 30,000 a night with 5th night free
= 120,000 points total
Now under new system its either 60,000 a night with 5th night free 240,000 points total
or
120,000 points plus 1008 Euros cash......

So what's the official verdict (from Lauren) on what seems like an outright lie from Hilton ?
Like most others, I just priced up a C+P for the HGI in Dubai. Last week it was 183 AED + 12K and now (with the new system) it is 256 AED + 12K.
Base cost is still the same (ie 30K per room) but it is clear that the C+P has gone up despite the promise that it would not exceed previous ?

That is over now.

I am simply not seeing any rooms at the capped points rate or lower at many hotels which begs the question as to how they can claim that the cap is still in place. This does seem to be false at many hotels.
It would be nice if Lauren could respond to these issues as currently loyalty to Hilton is deteriorating faster than a chocolate teapot with boiling water!!

I think now the dust settled it is clear what is happening:
1. There is no more low/high season.
2. All redemptions for standard room are based on monetary value of 0.005 to 0.0055 $/point.
3. Number of points for standard room is capped at what was the high season (or maximal) number of points under the old tier system.
Practical implications:
1. As there is no more low season redemption - huge devaluation. I'm sure Hilton would say the prices would be lower and therefore required points will be lower - but the value was always was in the shoulder seasons (when points are low and prices are already high). No wonder Hilton plugged that hole.
2. If one redeemed only at high season - there will be no change.
3. The cap for standard room can change anytime and without an established tier system it will only go up and will do it without anyone noticing, or any advance notice.
Personally, as I'm using the points only in the old high season where points redemption saves me a very substantial sum in taxes - it would not affect me much, but still, I have to give it to Hilton - managing to cover a huge devaluation in a great spin off. Most customers would not even realize that the change is so bad.

A hotel's IT department isn't responsible for determining the points rate for every hotel in the chain. That's not what IT departments do.

The only theoretical benefits are:
- High season redemption when your account is slightly short of the points needed for the full award. You have 65k, award is 70k, now you can get full "value" from the 65k.
- Really, really low rate at a property that charges junk fees. Now, you might be willing to accept 0.005 if it also gets you out of a resort fee. These are undoubtedly going to be pretty rare. Maybe Vegas in the summer? Are there cheap Hiltons there that charge resort fees? (My only experience there is HGVC - no resort fee.)

To be hhonest, the worst part about the new program is that we now live in a world with only one major points/miles program with redundant letters in the spelling.
American Airlines' AAdvantage is the lone survivor of this once thriving clever marketing gimmick. It's a sad day indeed.

If you have a lot of points like me, it is like we all invested in the Yugoslavia Dinar.. yesterday something was 30,000 today over 1 million.
Clearly a major devaluation sold as enhancements.

(At least, I'm pretty sure it used to be AAdmiral's Club...)
