What is the best HH property closest to the airport?

Hampton Inn

The Hampton Inn Airport is within walking distance or ride the shuttle. The hotel is clean, modest and inexpensive. I sometimes stay overnight before an early flight in order to get free parking.

Thumbs down TUS -- Airport Embassy Suites

Just finished a one-night stay.

Room smelled "funny" (mold or cigarette smoke or both).
Stayed any way as it was late.

In the morning, after taking a shower, I walked to the edge of the bed to get dressed. While putting on my socks, I thought the bottom of my feet looked weird. Took a washcloth and wiped them. The cloth came back brown (like I had been walking barefoot through dirt/sand).

Breakfast was fine.

No USA Today (HH Diamond here).

Mentioned issues to the front desk.
They waived all charges (even the internet connect).
Stay was free.

Best location vs the airport, but I won't stay there again.

I used to stay there frequently in the late 90s. Sounds like it has gone badly downhill.

Too bad. If you need to be near the airport, the location can't be beat.

I've stayed at the El Conquistador a number of times through Priceline for about $60 a night(Now the Omni comes up instead of the Hilton). The El conquistador is really nice with several restaurants and a great view of the mountains. it is not convieniently located for business in my opinion. It's more of a resort destination hotel with a golf course, horseback riding, hiking trails and multiple pools with a water slide.

It is about 30 to 40 minutes from the airport.

This looks like one of the most recent posts I can find on this property.

Any more recent reports?

Went ahead and booked the suite you describe with BR/LR/Kitchenette since with three guys on a road trip, didn't want to take the chance of not getting an upgrade. $100 was the rate.

Cblaisd: You made the right choice.

I stayed at the Embassy last fall and it was an outstanding deal at $60. It may have been a gov rate, but if you can get a good price there I'd suggest it. It's certainly not the most beautiful Embassy in the world, but it is the only one that I've ever been to that gave me good diamond recognition (chocolate, a bottle of champagne, robes, personal note from the manager), and it had one of the better breakfast buffets.

Sound nice! The ES for my dates is substantially more expensive than the Hampton.

One night at the HGI last month at a $60 rate. Just fine - standard (nice) HGI rooms. Great value w/Gold benefits - got two breakfasts (didn't upgrade because 'basic' got make-your-own waffles and hot oatmeal), plus the $5 pantry coupon.

We stayed at the Hilton Tucson East proprty Friday. AAA rate of $69. Got (as Gold), water & cookies in room, u/g to club floor, and choice of 1,000 points, appy in lounge or one other amenity I forgot. Buffet breakfast downstairs as the lounge was closed (only open for reception SU-TH and Breakfast M-F). Wi-fi is free for now.

Thanks for the recommendation (went on the Friday night). The spelling's Las Cazuelitas so people can find the place - I had to guess that the place I found in the phone book was the one you meant. There's actually 2 branches now but both seem to be equally distant from the Tucson East property. The tableside guacamole isn't actually on the menu but offered when you order ($6 vs. $3.50 for the side portion). The woman who makes it is too damn fast. She was done and gone before I could fish out a George Washington for a tip! Excellent and fresh too. Tortillas are freshly made too. Great service. Clientele and staff are Mexican (staff exclusively) and Spanish of course is the language of the house. The place is bilingual and the staff are fluent in English so no worries abotu any language barriers. The mariachi band plays a little too loud (and unamplified at that). A couple of the singers must be trained as they can sing loud and clearly without amplification.

Wouldn't call it a non-chain. All the within-park accomodations (both north and south rim) are operated by Xanterra who also operate the park lodges at Bryce, Zion and Crater Lake among others.

Did a couple of stays there 2 weeks back. Basic Hampton except the staff are mostly Navajo. Property is owned by the daughter of the man who owned the nearby Holiday Inn. The only differences for a normal Hampton are 1) there's an in-house restaurant, 2) extensive gift shop, and 3) breakfast is a touch better than normal HIs. A very nice banana bread is served.

Glad you enjoyed it. The first time I asked one of my Anglo friends in Tucson for a Mexican food recommendation, he told me I couldn't get good Mexican in Tucson! I turned to another local, Cesar, who sent me to Las Cazuelitas (thank you for the correction). I'm always disappointed when I travel with a group, if I can't talk them into at least one dinner there.

I've been at the Hilton El Conquistador for a week over the last two New Years for business and it's great. The food hotel has everything -- lots of restaurants, nice pool, spa, horseback riding, tennis golf -- and I've always been treated well as a gold. I'm looking forward to my stay again this year.
