Not sure what the real name for it is, but I always call it the Thanksgiving Sandwich.

Turkey, mayo, stuffing, cranberry sauce and lettuce. The stuffing makes it.

That list is pretty slim compared to what it once was. I remember staying in Tampa for 3 nights and eating at 2 different Bennigans while I was there. Sadly, none in TN right now, but good to see the Monte Christo alive and well.

People ate there?:D

The ones I went to in California and a few other states in the late 70s - early 80s were all about the bar scene. Ultimate pick-up joints, or meat markets if you prefer....:)

I used to eat at the one in Stamford, CT right after I got my first check card. It was one of the few places near me that had iDine and they had a really hot hostess (at least, I thought so at 18). The food was never very good though.

At home (classy version): Grilled cheese with Tillamook Cheddar on Grand Central Como

At home (white trash version): Tuna with chopped pickles and crushed potato chips on white bread

Deli/restaurant or food cart: (tie) Rueben or gyros

A search of this thread indicates that my British domestic partner's favorite sandwich is not listed. She uses white bread, butter and then sliced banana. She loves it. i don't know as I have never tried her sandwich. On the other hand my father liked white bread, butter and then a thick layer of brown sugar. I've had some of them and I liked them. So that's my contribution: a BANANA SANDWICH and a BROWN SUGAR SANDWICH.

The Italian Combo at the local deli in the town where I grew-up was (and remains) my favorite. I do a pretty credible re-creation of it at home (we don't really have any credible Italian delis here in Hartford).

I use:

Arthur Avenue Italian Bread
Iceberg Lettuce
Yellow Onion
Hot Cherry Peppers
Light Olive Oil & Red Wine Vinegar
Hellman's Mayonaise
Mortadela
Genoa Salami
Pepperoni
Boiled Ham
Provolone Cheese
Oregano

I"ll second that Mr. PresRDC. Thanks for the recipe -- not many credible delies down here in TX either.

provolone, american, bacon, honey mustard on a hard roll...

Another vote for ruben but with a slight twist
Montreal smoke meat instead of pastrami, and dijon mustard instead of thousand island dressing

The brown sugar sandwich is really good using lefse instead of white bread. My father liked Campbell's Pork and Beans right out of the can on white bread.
He made it for me for lunch one day when my mom was out. She was not pleased, but I liked it.

I really like any kind of grilled sandwich made with any variety of meat, cheese, and cabbage.

At home I make a sandwich out of rosemary ciabatta bread, slathered with olive oil saturated with dried rosemary and then layered with mozzarella and proscuitto. It's stunningly good. ^

Chicken cutlet, provolone, ltm on Portuguese roll.

My friend ,who was raised by English Nannies, considers Campbells Pork and Beans on white toast to be the ultimate in comfort food.

My Mom used to make me pork-and-bean sandwiches on Wonder bread with mayo all the time when I was a kid. I loved em!

Always Van Camps though....

Many good suggestions here, but after being in Paris the last few days, I am sticking with my favorite:

Walk into a bakery in France and buy a baguette. Then walk into a deli and buy a few slices of ham (either city ham or country ham) and a piece of cheese (virtually any cheese will do; whatever looks good at the time), and put it all together.
