Best Fish/Seafood restaurants in the World?

Inspired by the truly informative and appetizing steakhouse topic, let's have a thread on remarkable fish and seafood restaurants worldwide. The US East and West Coasts, South American specialities, Scandinavian Islands, the Bretagne and Normandie, Mediterranean ports... So much to choose from. ^

EDIT on October 7th: Oops, thanks to jpatokal and his recent trip report ( http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...5&page=1&pp=15 )noticed got both the beach and name wrong:

Sorry if I'm so fixated on Asia again, but I am particularly fond of the Millak Raw Fish Center on Gwangali beach in Busan, Korea. They have a fishmarket with a great variety of still alive Pacific fish, mussels, oysters, sea snails and every possible creature downstairs where you first enter to choose your dishes. After that you can select your restaurant from several upstairs where the cooks will prepare your choice while you idle away with a drink in hand looking at the magnificient beach view. In the summer and early autumn/fall there will be firework displays over the beach in evening time.

For a more down-to-earth delicacy, most sandwich shops in Amsterdam offer a tasty Herring sandwich filled with Matjes fillets, raw onion, boiled egg slices and some vinegar. Mmm, just don't go to a meeting afterwards without having at least a packet of chewing gum.

And I guess I should mention the Blinnis and Caviar at the 1812 in St.Petersburg, Russia. Although I personally prefer other fish eggs more, it would be blasphemy not to have a few with some local Vodka and Russian live music.

On the docks on Oslo. You can spend a lot more but you will never get fresher shrimp then the stuff they cooked on the way back from catching it. It's not a real restaurant, you are buying a liter of just cooked suckers off the back of the fishing boats, but you won't find any better shrimp.

My rented apartment in VCE in Dec 2003 was a great seafood palace. Everyday, I went to the Rialto Fish Market, came home and prepared beautiful and simple dishes with the most extraordinary fresh seafood Of course, I also bought my fresh vegetables at the Rialto. Even if you are not interested in preparing a meal, the Rialto Market in VCE is well worth a visit. During my 2 weeks there, I even found my favorite fishmonger.
I also have to say that we had a very good friend in Lisbon (sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago). The fish in Lisbon was so fresh and wonderful (particularly served with the "green wine.)"

As long as seafood is fresh, it's good. So it's tough to pick the best. I'd say any restaurant in Hong Kong or Japan where the fish is still swimming when you order.

In NYC, I'd pick FRESH.

Last Saturday night, I had one of the best meals of my life and certainly the best fish I've ever had - at Roy's in Poipu, Kauai, Hawaii. I had never even heard of butter fish before. It had been marinated for 48 hours in a soy/miso/ginger mix. Just amazing flavor. Light and flaky, like grouper. (Of course, finishing off the meal with chocolate souffle didn't exactly leave me with a bad impression either.)

I'm now anxious to try Roy's in Chicago.

Alle Testiere surely does rank (with me) as one of the greatest seafood restaurants in the world. This is a definite "don't miss" when you are in VCE. Reservations are absolutely essential as they are not open for lunch, have only about 8 tables and only 2 dinner seatings (I believe 7:00PM and 9:30 PM)

Mmmmmmmm butterfish.... I first had it a couple months ago.

Have to agree with Willie's & adamak's comments above about picking a favorite.

Most any proper sushi bar or "ryo-tei" (traditional Japanese food restaurant) in Japan will serve some of the most amazing seafood in various preparations, from raw to braised to grilled. Any sushi bar around Tsukiji Fish market in Tokyo will have sublime sushi and sashimi for reasonable prices. Elsewhere, the pricing can get scary!!

A nice lobster boil-up in Newfoundland or in New England is also quite remarkable. The Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine had a lovely restaurant with great seafood.

Le Bernardin in New York has some lovely seafood preparations as does Nobu New York.

Goumard in Paris served some of the most succulent langoustines I have ever had......
