Hmmmm... hard to say but your TN does seem to indicate possible issues with the bottle. Was this wine cellared for a long time...?!

Describe "musty." Often corked wines are described as having a wet cardboard or barnyard kind of smell. It's very possible. How much experience with champagne do you have?

Aside from Krug and Dom on SQ, not much I've actually been on a bit of a champagne kick lately, so I've been trying out different kinds. I purchased the Bollinger a few months ago in a wine shop. So I don't think it was stored improperly.

It did smell a bit like wet cardboard. It wasn't overpowering, but it was definitely there. From what I understand, corking is somewhat rare. But between the smell and the bland taste, I couldn't bring myself to drink anymore of it.

Could have been corked, usually seems to happen with 1 out of every 12 bottles or so. Might also be some mild brettanomyces (sp?) contamination, or cellar funk, or some other contamination. It would be hard to tell without tasting it also. Needless to say, if you didn't like it and got that kind of sensation/aroma, it was a bad bottle. Don't give up on Bolli, they do good things

Agree. Could have been a compromised bottle given your description of the wet cardboard notes. I would suggest trying another.

might just be bolli, it's sort of built for british tastes. if your taste runs to " Aside from Krug and Dom ", bolli would taste a lot less sharp.

which level of bolli? i went to a major RD tasting a while back, and to my taste, these wines were all way over the hill.

many wine merchants keep their most expensive wines on the top shelf, and turn the A/C off when they close at night. here in the DC area, top shelf gets pretty toastie up there.

The Bollinger was a Special Cuvee. I'll give it another shot in a few weeks and will let you guys know how I find it. Thanks!

i think in the bolli line, that wine is the bottom of the barrel. i think dom, and most krug are blanc de blanc(all chard). the bolli is over half pinot noir and some Pinot Meunier only 20-25% chard. the bolli is also mixed vintages.

One bottle in every case is no good? And the source of this revelation is what?

Almost.....

Champagne that is 100% Chardonnay does not automatically mean its the best of that house, or even high end. Plenty of BdeBs that are "standard". Also.... Bland de Noirs can be super duper ultra high end, and with a price that makes vintage Krug look like a Costco Spoof Juice.

Dom Perignon does not make a BdeB that I know of... could be wrong but I will take a wager. Need to confirm on Krug... I cant remember the blend on the Clos du Mesnil... but regular vintage Krug is surely not a Blanc de Blancs.

you're very right about dom, it is a 60/40. krug Clos du Mesnil Blanc de Blancs vintage is chard. i do not do the mega buck labels, and certainly did not realize that dom was just a pinot blend. i find that to be hilarious. here i thought it so vvvvvvvveeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry special.

note:i have only drunk gifted dom. and with my attitude, not many people have often given me a bottle.

i have been able to acquire therry thiese(sp?) champ, which is small grower stuff. no label, good wine. keep Parker away.

I've heard about this in multiple sources- one of which was my wine class teacher. However she did mention that was the case before corkscrews... now the corks seem to have less contaminents with stronger competition
