Canned clam chowder - are there any that are not blech?
Nothing compares to the real thing, of course. My favorite ever was at a down-home restaurant in the Noyo Harbor in Ft. Bragg, CA.
But sometimes you can't always get what you want...
So is there a canned clam chowder (New England style, please!) that is not, as so many seem to be, really Potato Chowder with Flecks of Clammish Material Sort Of?

The least 'blech' I've had is Wolfgang Puck, but it's still blech. On the rare occasions when I buy canned clam chowder, I usually buy a can or two of chopped clams to add to it.

I like Progresso with an added can of whole baby clams thrown in... a little bit of butter.... some pepper .... and the smallest dash of sherry. Tasty.

This thread is "New England clam chowder" blasphemy.
Of course there is no such thing as an alternative to cream, butter, potato, and lots of real clam meat, clam chowder. A couple squares of sweet corn bread on the side, for my taste, too, please.
The OP could always buy a can of Progesso and throw in some chopped clam meat, along with about six other ingredients, but by then you might as well be making your own from scratch.

Hope's kitchen makes some really quite good it is NOT canned, it is in the refrigerator section.
HEB/Central Market here carries it, and Whole Foods does as well.
It is good for a single guy
I can make a really killer lobster bisque or clam chowder when I have the time, but sometimes while not as good, this still hits the spot.

I used to do that a lot when I did my own shopping. Without adding some extra clams, you end up having potato chowder with some of these can ones.

Ivar's isn't bad. You can use it as a base, and dose it up with extra milk, sherry, clams, other fish, etc.:

It's not strictly in a can though.
