And I'm not sure if I made that point firmly enough.
Don't order anything in Venice unless you are clear about how much it costs.

My favorite sardines come anywhere on the Mediterranean coast in a small restaurant with a Pastis if it's France or white wine if it's not, and a plate of the grilled fresh sardines in front of me consumed while watching the waves and/or beach occupants.

This Mediterranean thing has some merit...best sardines I've had were large (at least compared to the canned ones) grilled ones in a little cafe near the water in Genoa....very very different.
But I like the canned ones, too, on saltines.
My dad showed me that one, brings back memories.

I prefer the canned ones in a mustard or tomato sauce. Always on saltines. It's been years, but I have a can in my office for the next time I can't get away for lunch.
My cookbooks have lots of pictures of large sardines, usually shown grilled, but I've never seen them. I'll be in Rome and Naples next month and will be on the lookout.

My wife hates 'em, but this sounds like ambrosia to me.

I love sardines, and just learned of this trick from a Portuguese friend of mine. Healthy and filling.
Of course, the worst tragedy in the US sardine world is the importer of Bela-Olhao sardines has quit the business. Can't find 'em anywhere. King Oscar just isn't the same. Any other recs for a high quality sardine?

Two weeks ago, we tried a new (for us) sushi bar, and the itamae handed me a sardine sushi without telling me what it was. Blew me away! I'd actually never had sardine sushi before, and I've eaten a lot of sushi. I do love fresh sardines too, as well as good sardines out of the tin. I never age them as some of the French do, but that could be interesting to do some day.
