The Joy of Sardines

I love me some sardines!

Rich in omega 3s, protein, and best of all, CHEAP!

My faves are in tomato sauce. I also like canned herring in paprika sauce. This is a popular snack in Eastern Europe.

And when I get to the city, I'm always at Russ and Daughters in my old neighborhood to buy their pickled herring. Yum!

But sardines. Cheap, tasty, and available just about everywhere! ^^

Sardines are great. By themselves as a snack, or as a component in a dish; they add a bit of umami to various sauces and dishes.

I love me some sardines, too! The best I've had have been in Spain -- these are white sardines served at room temperature in a little oil. Mmmmm . . . yummy!

In the small fish category, let's not forget Kippers and Fried Smelt!

(Canned smoked clams are good too)

Cheers,

How about anchovies on pizza?

I would love to try those featured on Bourdain's 'No Reservation" show. Esp the Spanish ones. I don't know where I can get them though.

I can go for that, but only on part of the pizza. I don't want the whole pie to taste like anchovies.

I'm not sure either, but I'm guessing that somewhere in NYC you will find exactly what you need.

The really small ones (about 2 inches long) in oil are wonderful. The larger ones are edible but ....

Absolutely and utterly disgusting.

If you luvs the sardines, you must have them grilled in Collioure France. Delightful.

HIDDY Feb 1, 2010 6:27 pm

Oh you can't beat some sardines on buttered toast.......and a dash of chilli sauce to spice things up a bit. ^

You are right. I had forgotten about those memorable grilled sardines. They were delicious there and also in Corsica. Nothing at all like those sardines found in cans.
