Question for the aviation industry experts on here: how long does it take to complete construction of an A220 series aircraft, and then how long does it take to get a certificate of airworthiness from the FAA?

I think there's some pilot politics involved as well. 717s are an outgrowth of the DC-9/MD-80/MD-90 line and share a type rating. ATL had by far the biggest concentration of MD series pilots and has the maintenance infrastructure and expertise with 717s so it makes sense that they are retained. I also wouldn't expect them to be retired anytime soon. They're all around 20 years old so Delta probably thinks they're just entering their mid-lives. Assuming the A321 and MAX10s are 757 replacements they've still got ~120 ex NWA A319/A320s that are almost all older than the 717s to replace first.

Delta exercised options for 12 more A220-300s. Great news because they are great planes. These birds will be delivered in 2026 and 2027 and bring the total Delta A220 fleet to 119 frames.

I assume they reference the preferable seat width and 2x seating options found on a vast majority of their widebodies. There had to have been a better way to say that.

I feel pretty confident though in saying that A220 is the best non-regional narrowbody in the fleet so DL can say whatever they want in their PR but it's definitely a quality aircraft in my book.

I'm happy to see these orders -- we're starting to get a few more A220s cycling through RDU, primarily on RDU - LGA at the moment but I'm hopeful we'll start see A221s or A223s on some of the longer, thinner routes out of RDU (e.g., AUS, SLC during the offseason, SEA instead of the dreadful 738).

Amen, please get these down to Charlotte at some point, tired of the 717 routes and RJs here, use the 220 to LGA or BOS routes at least!

And please use them to upgage some routes that need more than Delta Connection service. We occasionally see an A319 here in PSC, but could use the A220 for service to SLC, MSP and hopefully one day ATL.
