I feel compelled to do a follow-up to my earlier comments based on the catastrophe of my Delta One Transcon Flight from JFK to LAX on Friday evening since the turd cherry on top was that not only did we have an aircraft change but we got regular non Transcon food and less beverages (two hours into the flight they were already out of Club Soda). I was flying JFK-LAX Delta One on a 767, had booked my own seat on the window (5A). Checked in soon after the 24 hour checkin was available. Everything all set and looking good. Right as I am arriving at JFK I notice my seat has changed from 5A to 4A and I further investigate on the Delta Ap and see we are now on a 757, but I look at the amenties and it is still listed as lie flat seats so I naturally assumed it was the 757 Transcon config and even through I am a bit annoyed about that as I specifically maneuvered schedule wise for the 767 I foolishly thought everything else was fine. WRONG. I walked onto the plane and turned into the First section and stopped dead in my tracks, it was just an old fashioned 757. Not even close to 180 recline seats. After sitting down I see the ground crew having an intense conversation with the flight crew. Then over the intercom along with a profuse apology about the change in planes was the news that food would not be transcon but regular and that there would be less beverages and food than usual (and yes, regular wines, not Transcon wines). There was obviously also a delay with this all going on and the most irritated First Class cabin (including myself) that I have ever seen. On a positive, they did follow FEBO so I was one of the first ones to order so I got the tiny overcooked beef filet with potatoes.

Now, we will see a series of posts for whom this is a non-issue, since it was not their issue.

Yes it is a non-issue as long as StayingHomeIsBetter is compensated (refunding price difference between D1 and F would be a fair comp).

Would it be better to cancel the flight or delay it for several hours so that a 20 out out 200 people could get 180-degree recline on a 5 hour domestic flight? Looks like Delta did a good job overall finding the aircraft, but catering could be D1 (unless there are logistical issues with different ovens galleys etc that make it difficult to prepare D1 meals on non-D1 flights).

Compensation is definitely due for paid D1 pax.

It would be better for the GA to make a gracious, apologetic announcement -- including info about how to request compensation and/or rebooking if they're not being proactively offered -- so as to avoid the aforementioned shock upon boarding. Reasonable folks are understanding of operational circumstances, but loathe being kept in the dark. Back at pmUA I had a p.s. flight sub to a regular 757 as part of blizzard recovery/capacity increase, and everyone was way more at ease due to the clear announcements at the gate.

does this happen at all on AA, UA or even B6?

Except that neither of those words describe DL's JFK employees.

It used to happen quite often (that's vague, I know, but there were definitely repeated stories here) on AA, when they were using the 767-200ERs on this route and there was no spare capacity, so if a bird when MX (and they did...), they would often downgrade to a regular 757. And this was a 3-class service -- 9 or 10 F seats and 30 J seats, going to 22 or 24. It apparently got ugly...
Can't say I've heard about it much since they're on the newer and presumably more reliable 321s.

Based on your logic, airlines should never have started allowing customers to pre-select their seats either. I mean, if I select a seat early then it reduces the choices for everyone else.

"Logic" is being generous.

Any updates on timing for implementation?
I'm flying TCON D1 in a couple weeks and i'm wondering if this option might be available to me soon.. thanks

We're 10 days out from the end of the year...any word on implementation?

On another note, as someone with some dietary restrictions, but generally prefers the regular catering to special meals even if I need to remove a couple of ingredients, it would be infinitely useful for me to see what is being offered on a given flight ahead of time and then decide if its workable or if I need to special order rather than waiting and seeing day-of.

Is it "soon" yet?

I'd put money on it never happening.

I have asked the Delta food PR rep over and over and all I get is they will tell me as soon as they have more updates.

Delta pre-order meals

I did a search but couldn't find the answer.

Does DL offer pre-ordering of meals in premium cabins like AA does?
I thought I read something from a couple years ago but not sure if it is offered.

I fly coach on DL, but am contemplating going D1 to Asia next year.

Thanks!

They did talk about a few years ago, but never did it. All could do is order the "special dietary meal" Yuck! FYI we would all love to pre order!

My first international this year is not until April so one year on we are still waiting for the "soon" implementation of this model?
