Trying to remember. Probably 4 shirts and two jackets and some pants, in a garment bag that normally goes in the closet. A carry bag attached to a roller, which had to be unattached at five points to fit in the very small overhead. And my Briggs & Riley bag, which is not much of a problem.
It was the carry bag and roller which caused the time delay, as I wasn't prepared to pull apart. I'd have been glad to pull into row 3 and get it done, and let everyone by. Since ATC really determines when we take off, it probably didn't affect schedule, though-- but it could, so let the people past!

. I'd have preferred to hop into an aisle and do my thing, and if I pack like that again (the carry bag, which is custom equipment, will usually be checked) I'll be prepared to pull it apart faster, perhaps carabiners... presuming that's not something that gets confiscated by overzealous security at AICM!Sorry to have been *that guy* on this flight. I'll also try to make sure, I don't get onto any craft, with the same situation.

I've been in F many times when they do it, and I'm not a big fan. It doesn't speed up the deplaning of F that much, maybe you get off 30 seconds or a minute earlier, and it slows down the deplaning of the rest of the plane by a minute or two. Also I feel like an a-hole as I walk out while the rest of the plane is being held back.

I'm more of a fan when deboarding is through the forward door, and not a center door behind first. Generally, I think a good FA can make sure coach PAX do not slow down First much, and it's silly to hold off Coach from deboarding if they're not affecting First.
That said, one minute can chain into a extra five at customs and another five with baggage. If you're pitching to VC, or headed into a cabinet meeting, or being flown in to perform surgery, etc etc, that time can be critical. FWIW.

What I've observed is that the FAs block Y pax (except those seated between F and the door) while the F pax are leaving; when there's a gap in the F pax, they let Y pax through.
That, at least, is the way it should be and often is.

If I carry a roll of duct tape so that I can bind multiple items into a "single carry-on" does the roll of duct tape count as one of my permitted carry-ons?

Am I missing something here? The GA and FAs let you onto the plane with what were essentially four carry-on items?

I consolidat all the time, though. I have a very small shoulder/hip bag (fits wallet, phone, passport, boarding pass) that gets shoved into my backpack. I also usually have an international-sized polycarbonate roller.
Is this considered too much carry on baggage? Roller fits easily into all but the CRJ-xxx overheads, and backpack easily under the seat.

What I'm pointing out, is a potential snowball effect in causal chains.
A minute deboarding, can put me behind 30 people if a large international flight or two, are also deboarding at the same time. That can be the difference, between being at the head of a hitherto empty border control line,
and 30 back.
If you're at the start of border control, you'll generally get passed through without question, if you've got a lot of stamps.
Ditto this to customs. And baggage. A minute can turn into 30 there alone.
If you're catching an express shuttle downtown that runs every 20 minutes, then on average, you have another 10 minutes at stake there.
As regards surgery, not my specialty, though a medic's kit is always among my carry-ons. The point is that I'd rather have my surgeon, have an extra 45 minutes free, than not. And you would too, whether you know it or not!

It seems to me that the poster had 3 carry on items - roller w/ built-in detachable carry bag, garment bag, and Briggs&Riley bag (description missing).

In the end, I've never had to check, and it's less weight and volume than most roll-aboards. You may shoot me for having been *that guy* once, three times would merit total obliteration.

As for the roll of duct tape, wear it as a bracelet!
