Oops, I read "when" rather than "why".
I would assume it's route optimization? Use a 330 where they can't fill a 747, and stick a 747 where they're routinely filling the flights. I don't see a drop in frequency (4X daily DTW-AMS before and after 3/28, although oddly flying on 3/28 has a $4000 markup vs flying on the 27th
).

Knowing Delta, they will probably try to delay an aircraft order or two while fuel prices are cheap. It is also, as posted above, a good time to get their more fuel efficient aircraft in the shop for any needed upgrades or maintenance.

Yeah with oil prices going through the floor, I wonder if that'll make them delay retirement any. It certainly makes the payback period of the more efficient jets a lot longer.
Could be a good time to load up on hedges also.

I hope that I am not beating a dead horse or bringing up something that has already be discussed on another thread, but why not turn the 747's into Combi's like KLM?
The question comes from a place of total bias. I love the 747's, flow in the UD on four different occasions, loved every second. So why not move the 747's to SEA as Combi's the fly to SIN, ICN, HKG, CDG, FRA, PEK, and other heavy cargo places. Use the new a350's out of JFK because you have new product for New York.
Just eliminate rows 51-67 and redo the floor and back doors. I know that the heavy checks are coming up for the 747 and that is part of the reason that DL is getting rid of them. But didn't Delta just spend several billion to update them? Again a place of total love of the 747 and sorrow that it is going.
Please tell me why I shouldn't be the replacement for Richard Anderson

The cargo market has an immense glut of capacity right now. SQ has been parking freighters, KL and OZ have too many freighters for the Korean market as is, etc. Every plane from a 737 on up to the A380 has cargo and with more and more planes flying more and more places, the role of dedicted / combi freighters just isn't going to be very lucrative.

Oct. 2014. 2 months ago. I used 2 GUC's to upgrade us for the ride home. Went MNL-NRT-DTW-DFW-SLC.
BTW, NRT-DTW upper deck completely full. Only ride from MNL-NRT was empty except for my wife and I.
And in case you are assuming I meant I visited the cockpit during flight, no. It was still on the ground in MNL.
Sorry if it sounded that way.

Looks like one of the four 744s has been granted an official reprieve — and might even spend its summer flying ATL-HNL. I suspect that's to rotate the planes through maintenance?

I wasn't able to make things work to get one to Europe this year. I'm sure I can find an excuse to take Mrs. Lee to Hawaii, though.
