Apparantly it will be in MSP for around a week getting landing gear replaced. Possibly a flight after that!

Another 744 mx flight. 9933 dtw-msp scheduled for later night.

Hopefully they will do some rev flights with the 2 there when they are done!

Hi flyertalk,

My first post so go easy on me!
I managed to fly on a DL 747 from LAS to NRT mid Jan. I believe it was a special service for CES. It was so sick to be back on the Queen of the skies. Of course the minute I realized it was a 747 I grabbed a seat upstairs and even got in to the cockpit before take off.

So sad to see them go...

Nice! And on a special route, too!

How do you get to visit the cockpit? Is it just offered to passengers in the upper deck?

They seem to leave the door open, and when boarding you can just walk up and say hi. I've always found the pilots very welcoming, and they've let me sit in the pilot seat for photos. Very cool...

+1 - we did this on a DTW-PVG a few months ago.

ESPECIALLY if seated on the UD, the flight crews are very welcoming on the flight deck during boarding. They're proud of the plane and are happy to show passengers around, talk about the history, etc. When we went up, the captain was busy doing preflight stuff, but the FO as well as the relief crew were all hanging around and happily chatted us up and answered questions for a good 5 minutes or so. They insisted on both me and Mrs. Lee sitting in the right seat with one of their caps on for photos.

The key, of course, is being respectful and letting them first and foremost get their work done. Otherwise, imagine that you really enjoy your job and someone comes into your office and asks you to tell them all about what you do. That seemed to be the vibe I got from them when I wandered up.

Just chiming in like the others. Once I dropped my stuff off (was seated upstairs) I walked up and respectfully asked if I could take a look. They were excited to show it off and seem to have a lot of pride in flying these things.

Same experience here on NRT-DTW a few months ago. Wasn't on the upper deck, but after waiting for most people to de-plane on arrival in DTW I asked the crew if I could go up and check it out. Once up there, the co-pilot was more than willing to show off the cockpit, let me sit in the pilot's seat, etc. Really great folks!

I really need to get on a DL 747 one more time before they go. Flew one summer 2015 ATL-AMS. Summer 2016 I flew on a KLM 747, but it wasn't the same.

If I have time, I'm booking the next DTW-MSP or similar that pops up.

I am flying on a 744 in V from DTW to ICN. I am currently sitting in an aisle seat. Should I keep the aisle so I can walk about now and then, or grab a window for the views?

I assume it is my last flight on a 744. Given that, what should be the protocol for me if I want to explore the aircraft?

Definitely keep the aisle, so you can stretch and do some laps. If you want to get a look upstairs, and maybe visit the cockpit, do it early in the boarding process as that is likely your only chance.

I've got an upcoming trip, BOS-DTW-ICN. DTW-ICN is on a 747. My seats are on the upper deck. I actually booked this instead of going via JFK on the KE A380. This will quite likely be my last opportunity to fly on a 747.

Dumb question... Does seat 1A (on the lower deck) give any better view than other seats? If the view is good, I'll move down to 1A. Otherwise, I'll stay on the UD.

view on 1A is a little more forward facing but kind of annoying with the closet. I would say I'm indifferent between the views but always take the UD for the private experience.
