The MXs on UA's 744s have dropped recently, no thanks in large part to the extensive maintenance on the fleet over the past three years. I was rather surprised to hear they will be keeping most of them until 2020 when they are up for D checks and the A35Js start coming online. Helps they will be concentrating them in SFO exclusively again beginning this fall, as two will be exiting the fleet. Seeing the 744s retiring makes me feel really old as I still remember them being state of the art once upon a time.

Its a shame that DL won't keep their 744s until they hit D check also, but I guess they got a pretty sweet deal from Airbus.

Not only that, but we can't get the 747s now. I targeted PVG for later this year but it turns out to be 10 days after the 747s are lost to PVG.
I am going to try and make a run to MNL which will surely be my last 747 run so I must enjoy it to the fullest.

The collapse of the Yen in addition to the strength of the dollar compared to other East Asia currencies has more to do with their earlier than expected retirement. Delta has been far more exposed to the Yen devaluations than UA/AA due to the NRT hub without a JV partner in Japan. Its hard to remember that just before the 2011 earthquake and the subsequent Yen devaluations, NRT was still the most premium heavy hub in Delta's system. The original plan was to retire them upon D checks starting in 2018 but the rather drastic devaluations of the Yen really hit Delta hard rather quickly. The three 747s they retired last year just had wifi installed. If Airbus didn't have those earlier A350 slots open for Delta, I'm not sure what they would have done as they didn't want the 77W as it was too big.

When does the 747 disappear from the DTW-PVG route?

On October 25th and beyond (at least though the winter schedule) DTW-PVG is operated using a Boeing 777 aircraft.

Good to not yet be forced through SEA.

BTW, maybe DL is planning to sell its 747s to the new (or reborn) Avatar Airlines. If their creative funding attempt succeeds, they could buy those old birds very quickly. <just joking>

Has DTW-NRT been dropped? I can only find an A330 on delta.com.

By now, UA's probably replaced every single part on their 747's, and them some. Now, its US's 777 fleet that's hitting the skids. Poor maintenance program by an inept airline.

There are simply to many options to Asia from all points in NA. Major hubs to S.E. Asia are; JFK, BOS, ORD, EWR, DFW, IAH, DTW, SFO, LAX, and SEA. Just about every corner of the Continental US covers flights to the far east.

A bunch of 747 route changes again in the recent schedule update. Namely:
* DTW-PVG retains 747 to end of schedules still
* HNL-NRT retains 747 4 out of 7 days a week (for one of two daily flights, though now it's 6d 2 flts, 1d 1 flt very odd schedule)
* other 747 routes dropped earlier (e.g. HNL-KIX dropped Oct 1 vs later in Oct how it was earlier)

Net it seems that two more 747s are staying operational into 2016. But, I don't see what does the 4x weekly 747 on HNL-NRT is doing the other three days of the week (Tue-Thu).

This is all very fluid though and surely subject to change again numerous times before 2016.

I am having a hard time finding 747 to PVG pre-October 25 and when I do the Z fare is almost twice the fare going through SEA.
