They are a business, I certainly can't fault them for that.
I understand the 'why' of doing this... I'm one of the 'unclean spirits' who take your precious upgrades as a lowly GM out of ATL... Flying 51,000 miles in 2012 at a total cost of $3500 (always paid in cash) because I want to take multiple trips each year for vacation and a few for work (less govt money, less govt travel now)... Will I spend $5K AND get 50K miles? I could... Do I want to from a personal budget standpoint? Absolutely not... But I do get why they are doing it... |

One other question, and under MQD I'm guessing it wouldn't qualify, but would VDB usage count towards MQD?

A more interesting question would be pay with miles. |
Ok, apologies if this has already been answered but I haven't got the stamina to read through every post.
On current flying with rollover I am already diamond for 2014. If I continue at my current pace I will always be rolling over at least 125k and qualifying for the following year. I saw this as a way of getting a soft landing of least one additional year at diamond if my travel tailed off. However it now looks as if that rollover is worthless, if I don't meet the minimum spend level in the preceding year my rollover year will be diminished to level equivalent to my spend. Correct? |
awwww man! My M fare trick to boost my MQM's is now shot, unless B/Y fares are close to M on west coast TC trips. Oh well, good bye DM status, hello Kettle status!!

I am rightfully the target of the MQD requirement. I have been Platinum for 7 years and Diamond for 3 years and have never spent more than $5-6 k in any one year.
For 2013, I am platinum spending less than $1 k after using all of my IDB certs. I made DM for the first time last year, and according to my expense reports I spent $20k+ on airfare. I'm sure that even for those long years where I was just a lonely PM, I still would have exceeded $12,500. |
correct

Even more complicated is the Joint Venture agreement. What I wonder is what will happen with code-share partners, both Skyteam and non-Skyteam, and other tickets involving a transfer of airlines where the airline isn't even a code-share partner.

As a leisure flyer, this new announcement hurts. However, since I already have the Platinum Card and typically spend close to $25,000 a year, this will not affect me as much as those who do not have the card.
The card does, however, also help me to gain status with the 10,000 MQM bonus at the $25,000 spending threshold. If Delta and AMEX get rid of this bonus, there really wouldn't be a point for me to fly Delta. I am currently a Gold Medallion and do fly the cheap fares to gain status, along with having the Platinum Card. If Delta and AMEX were to remove the 10,000 MQM bonus, it would be too difficult to gain status and I would likely drop the card and Delta. Does anyone have any information if the MQM bonus will still be valid? |

I've always assumed that selling upgrades is one reason for my lack of upgrades, but when there are at least 16 DMs on one flight (who knows how many cleared at the window and how many were behind me on the list) and there are 46 people with status then it seems that there are too many elites.
My upgrade percentages are much better in March than they are in Feb (for obvious reasons) and so I think the selling of upgrades is only part of my problem. Because the $12,500 level is so small (and the $25k exemption is so small) I would guess these new restrictions won't bring much change in the amount of DMs nor will they bring me much better chances at an upgrade. The DM/PM ranks are so heavy and not for the most part to be effected by the changes; this combined with FCM IMO upgrade percentages won't be materially effected. |
