I did read the other thread. If these planes replace 50-seat aircraft, it's more seats per flight, which means either a capacity increase or a frequency decrease on routes that have 1-4 flights per day in general.

Yeah! Delta getting 717's is positive for me, since the last time I flew on a 717 was with Midwest Airlines in 2008. YX used to be my main airline, but after they went away, I got stuck on a bunch of CO 737's until I moved over to Delta and have been a lot happier.
Anyway, good news for Delta getting the 717. It does mean, however, that my DC-9 flights will be getting less and less very soon.

Going from 4 50-seaters to 4 76-seaters would be a 50% increase and add 100 seats to a route. Not going to happen.

I am confident that the only reason the DC9s still have such a nice FC ratio is that DL didn't want to invest in a major overhaul of a plane that they are taking out of service soon.
Compare the DC9 to the overhauled MD88, then to the 717:
Compare the DC9 to the overhauled MD88, then to the 717:
DC9s are 13% F, 12% EC, and 75% Y.
MD88s are 11% F, 10% EC, and 79% Y.
717s will be 11% F, 14% EC, and 75% Y.
So yes, a 717 will be worse than a DC9, but better than an MD88 (and much of the rest of the fleet) when you look at FC and EC ratios to the total capacity.MD88s are 11% F, 10% EC, and 79% Y.
717s will be 11% F, 14% EC, and 75% Y.

What's the difference? I've been on both, but far more often on the CR9. I love the CR9 (and CR7), but maybe I just like the familiarity of flying on what I know.
Is the E75 better than the CR9, or is it just a matter of personal preference?

I personally prefer the E75 from a passenger perspective as it has overhead bins that can accommodate full size rollaboards (versus pink tags on CR9s) as well as there is more shoulder room on the E-Jets over the Canadairs.

Love the ER. Fly several times a year from/to HDN-MSP and always upgraded.
I was working with Douglas/McAir/Boeing on the C-17 when the DC-9-? became the 717. Pretty nice airplane and many "fixes" from the earlier versions. I think this is a net positive for DL.

This is fantastic news -- and a very smart move for Delta, I think.
I'm puzzled why there are at least a few people who aren't happy with this move. If you're concerned about frequencies and (possibly) number of cities served, then OK, you might have a point. But comfort? This is great news for comfort. Delta is tossing hundreds of 50-seat regional jets and adding 88 mainline 717s plus scores of bigger regional jets. That means many more first class seats -- 1,056 more just within the 717 fleet. And these planes will likely have more bin space, wifi, power outlets, and somewhat better galleys. They'll also have more flight attendants per plane.
I'm curious where people think we'll see the 717s deployed. Looking at the 717's range, I think Minneapolis would make a superb 717 base. Every airport in the lower 48 is well within the 717's range from Minneapolis, plus a few airports outside (like Nassau and probably Mexico City, to pick a couple random examples). Memphis would work well, too. Other hubs/focus cities can work, just not for every lower 48 route.
