The RJs have 50 seats, so multiply that by 228 airplanes that are going away and you have 11,400. So right now, we’re removing 13,920 seats and adding back only 9,680. What about the rest?

Add in (up to) 70 new 2-class, 76-seat RJs permitted under the revised scope clause waiting to be approved by the pilots. The plan is pretty close to seat-for-seat.
well, crankflier is not known for his accuracy

For those of us who wished NWA would have carried on the North Central/Republic legacy of the DC9 into a big MD80/MD90/717 purchase, there is some excellence here.

OK,

Let's do the real math:

228 CRJs x 50 seats = 11,400
+ 21 DC-9-50s x 125 seats = 2,625
= 14,025 seats

and

70 CR9s/E75s x 76 seats = 5,320
+ 88 717s x 110 seats = 9,680
= 15,000 seats

So in reality, we're gaining 975 seats to fly on

Yep, the DC-9-50s that were inherited from NW are on their way out of the DL fleet.....

And I think I saw an actual time line for this somewhere, but, of course, I cannot find it now.....

BTW, welcome to FT!

An MD90 just made its way to Delta from Japan Airlines. I believe they have one left due in now.

After the last MD90 comes in, the rest will be the deliveries of the 717 and 737-900ER's.

After that who knows what the next move will be.

Delta will have a super large Mad Dog fleet with its MD88, MD90 and MD95 rebadged as the Boeing 717.

I'm all for any plane with a two seat pair in Y. However, I hope DL pours some money into the aircraft because the ones I've flown with FL are really ratty.

From a purely nostalgic standpoint, I do hope this doesn't hasten the removal of the DC-9-50s. I love stepping back into the 1970's on one of them.

Let's not forget that the DC-9s all have 16 FC seats while the 717s are expected to have 12 FC for DL. BAD.

I am confident that the only reason the DC9s still have such a nice FC ratio is that DL didn't want to invest in a major overhaul of a plane that they are taking out of service soon.

Compare the DC9 to the overhauled MD88, then to the 717:
DC9s are 13% F, 12% EC, and 75% Y.
MD88s are 11% F, 10% EC, and 79% Y.

717s will be 11% F, 14% EC, and 75% Y.
So yes, a 717 will be worse than a DC9, but better than an MD88 (and much of the rest of the fleet) when you look at FC and EC ratios to the total capacity.

DL to sublease 88 B717s from WN

I saw a press release that indicated that DL would take over the leases on all 88 of Air Tran's 717s along with an agreement with the DL pilots union that allows the number of 76 pax RJs to rise to 325. The release said the agreement is tentative, but if it comes into play, the 717s and additional large RJs will replace a huge number of 50 seat RJs. This sounds like incredible news if this is true.

I'm surprised that DL is increasing capacity at this time. The capacity cuts have been very profitable.

Read the other thread. These and CR9s will replace all 50 seat RJs and DC9s... It's a capacity-neutral change.

Actually, it hasn't been decided yet if the expansion of 76-seat RJs will be the CRJ-900 or the Embraer 175 (or a combination of both). However, everything else is correct.
