Interesting. Something similar started happening a few weeks ago with my Amex. I raised the issue with Uber support and they told me to read the Uber Terms and Conditions, which means Uber support either didn't understand the problem, or that there is some kind of payment issue that is detailed in the Terms and Conditions.

In any case, I can still use the card to pay Uber via ApplePay. It's just annoying that it won't work directly in the Uber app and that Uber support won't do anything about it.

The system somehow blocks the HSBC card (and maybe the amex card for @ExpatExp also) from buying Uber cash 99% of the time. The card is then secretly flagged/restricted within Uber's backend system. The only way to resolve this and use the HSBC card to buy Uber cash is to get the right support person / escalation team via chat to unrestrict the card. Most of the time this is difficult because their support is clueless on the issue itself or doesn't know who to escalate to unrestrict the card. I have luck with just keep on pressing them on the chat to unrestrict the card and then I can use the card to buy Uber cash or a regular Uber ride.

If the HSBC card is restricted, then I cannot use it to pay for rides, ubereats, or buy Uber cash. While other cards like amex works fine within the same wallet. I've got $40 bucks to go to get back before end of the year then this card is going on the cancellation list.

I don't know what you're speaking of. I was able to use the HSBC to buy Uber Cash yesterday and it went through.

Very useful information -- thank you. I will keep being politely persistent in the chat with Uber help. Very frustrating that it's so difficult to resolve such a simple issue.

My World Elite card is up for renewal and with no useful credits to offset the $395 fee it isn't worth it anymore. Does HSBC do retention offers? Or should I transfer all my points out then phone in to cancel?

When I called to cancel they did offer me some points, though not enough to convince me to keep the card.

I wonder if the sign up bonus is avaliable again to those who previously had the card?

We'll find out for sure this week after earnings, however, FT is reporting this is confirmed already. Seems short sighted as many customers is Asia are likely interested in HSBC since they have a US presence. I myself have an HSBC account since they have a large international presence.

HSBC is accelerating its “pivot to Asia”, moving top executives from London to Hong Kong, scrapping its US retail banking operation and planning further expansion in Singapore.

Bad news, but not unexpected. I opened a US HSBC account only to be able to open an account in the UK.

HSBC has been trying to sell its French retail arm for some time now. I wonder who would buy their US business.

What's interesting is a new branch recently opened near me. They revamped the credit card rewards UI and are noting a refresh is coming to the general banking UI.

Various articles have mentioned: U.S. Bancorp, Citizens Financial Group Inc., KeyCorp and M&T Bank Corp..... Capital One Financial Corp......New York Community Bancorp Inc... and Canadian banks including Toronto-Dominion Bank.. (https://www.spglobal.com/marketintel...nmental-issues)

If you look at the geographic distribution of HSBC's USA branch network you can see that a piecemeal sale (or a re-sale by the first buyer) is plausible. There is a concentration in the northeast, primarily in New York. There is another concentration in California. Then there are small numbers in Washington State and Florida.

I wonder how HSBC US will handle the Premier customers? I opened my Premier account here to have accounts in SG and CN. I'd guess if US Premier customers are orphaned, move minimum balance to SG? Also I just learned that HSBC credit cards are owned by Capital One? Explains the sucky rewards program with the HSBC Premier MC.

No. The cards discussed in this thread are HSBC products.

On May 1, 2012, Capital One completed its acquisition of the majority of HSBC’s United States credit card business... HSBC is neither selling Capital One the totality of its U.S. credit card business, nor ceasing to issue credit cards in the United States. Prior to the sale, HSBC issued credit cards in the US through two distinct subsidiary companies: HSBC Finance Corp. and HSBC USA. Capital One purchased HSBC Finance Corp., which includes the popular brand names Orchard Bank and Household Bank as well as HSBC’s suite of co-branded cards, such as the Best Buy Credit Card and the GM credit card

I didn't know of the Capital One thing. That is interesting. My very first credit card in 2008 was with HSBC so I wouldn't want to lose that history.

I signed up for Premier due to the international presence. I was hoping to get an account set up in The Philippines soon since my wife's family is there. The announcement today (or at least what I read) seemed noncommittal. They noted a potential sale of the US business.
