I'm off to fight my 2-point careless driving ticket in municipal court. Let's hope the prosecutor and/or judge take America's "Be (Extra) Nice to Black People Day " to heart and cut me a good deal. ^

NJ state and federal courts are of course closed, but municipal courts operate at their own discretion today. And the one I need to appear in is open, court's at 6:00.

Our town likes to take all sorts of days off. I was particularly galled a few years ago when I found the library closed in honor of Lincoln's actual birthday.

I like the idea of MLK day, but I don't get it off. I didn't take it off, either. Our kids have the day off, but they've been off with friends all day. It's been relatively quiet at work. I like that. I get much more done.

What are people's view on MLK day as a holiday?

Well, I graduated from Dr. King's undergraduate alma mater, and think the holiday doesn't get nearly the respect it deserves - both in terms of recognizing it's a day when things should shut down, and a day where people should feel moved to do something to make a positive difference in the world (even if a small one).

G:eek::eek:d luck! Be warned that in NJ careless driving seems innocuous, but it can have huge insurance surcharge implications. This is true particularly if you get more than one in a couple of years. I've sat in municipal court watching incredulous as one citizen after another pleaded down to careless driving only to discover that since this was their 2nd (or 3rd!) the penalty was not as expected.

Lincoln's birthday was a NJ State holiday until a couple of years ago. Corizine made a fuss about all of the recently added holidays. The unions gave it up in favor in order to keep Election day which was added a few years ago.

It's still a state holiday in Illinois. The reasons for that are spelled out clearly on our license plates. :) In exchange, they don't take off Presidents' Day.

BTW, what theme park is the HGI in Carlsbad CA near?

Legoland
