Memorial Day and Labor Day have special status because they more or less mark the beginning and end of summer.

The federal holidays that are meaningful to us are those where the kids are off of school (so Martin Luther Kingand Presidents', besides the big two above). Lately, there's been some emphasis on Martin Luther King day as a day of service, and both my kids' schools sponsor service projects. This seems to me to be true to the spirit of the day and to provide something more than just another day off from school/bank holiday.

We started getting Martin Luther King day off this year as part of a corporate reorganization. I'm sure I have plenty of colleagues working today, given the work we do, but I'm also pretty sure that most of my clients are off today as well.

Columbus Day is a really big deal in areas with a significant population of Italian descent.

Our town likes to take all sorts of days off. I was particularly galled a few years ago when I found the library closed in honor of Lincoln's actual birthday.

That could be a stealthy way to lower costs and balance budgets while appearing to be patriotic and mindful of history.

Well, I graduated from Dr. King's undergraduate alma mater, and think the holiday doesn't get nearly the respect it deserves - both in terms of recognizing it's a day when things should shut down, and a day where people should feel moved to do something to make a positive difference in the world (even if a small one).

I think it depends. Our schools are doing a good job talking about the importance of the day. It's a little shocking for BL JR to hear what things were like before the civil rights movement because that isn't part of her world. We live in a diverse neighborhood, go to a diverse church and have a diverse family. Even at her young age, she's got a good grasp on why we are celebrating today and why she has the day off. Her Girl Scout troop had their entire lesson on fairness and learned about MLK as well (read a book). When I grew up, we didn't celebrate MLK day, and my college was the last college to have it as a holiday (in GA). Perhaps, if nothing else, it serves as a reminder of how far we've come.

I always find that funny as 1) he was working for the Spanish and 2) he arrived well after Erik the Red.

The Utah model? I "officially" only teach four days a week, which is why we don't have office hour responsibility on Fridays.

And here I was thinking that the key to the fun would be the pillaging. Or at least the required rations of beer on a regular basis.
