Do you have to just stockpile a winter's worth of provisions if you live on the Plateau? Do they even bother trying to plow roads up there? Are there roads? I guess a snowmobile would be the only reliable means of transport in winter.

I'm seriously intrigued at the thought of spending a winter somewhere like that. Would want to get my student loans paid off first and be free of any other obligations, but an adventure on that order would definitely be ^.

There's a NYS highway that's generally kept clear over the top of the hill (NY 177 - connects Lowville to I-81) and many other roads are basically packed snow. Like I said, I lived in the village and was able to get by OK, even with just having a Honda Civic to drive. There's a full grocery in town, a Wal-Mart (added since I left), and a few decent eating options. NY 12 is pretty much always kept clear except maybe while you're in the thick of a blizzard, and that gets you access to Watertown to the northwest (30 minutes), and Utica and the NY :rolleyes:way to the south (45-1hr).

It was an interesting time. I was involved in a long-distance relationship at the time (with the lovely gal I can now call Mrs. bdj), so I was flying to MEM about every third weekend. The other weekends, I was either taking up winter sports, indoor hobbies, playing PS2, and/or giving my liver a workout.

bdjohns1 can probably answer this better than I can, but I imagine the county roads get plowed...eventually.;) I've never been over there in the winter. I'm a little more familiar with the Speculator, NY area(basically the foothills of the Adirondacks) where you'll see hundreds of snowmobiles along side of the road, both recreationally and for survival.:D

See? He beat me to it.:)

A lot of the county roads are plowed. The good thing is that because the area's so rural, there aren't a lot of roads to be kept clear, so they get to them pretty quickly. They've got some serious plows. I can't think of a time that I woke up in the morning (even during a snowfall) and a truck hadn't been down my little side street within the past couple hours.

During the winter, I think there are several times more miles of groomed snowmobile trails than there are road miles.

This looks eminently reasonable to me...

I've always wanted to try snowmobiling.

When I was in NH we were supposed to go somewhere we used the GPS and got to the location, and it was a deadend into a snowplow snowbank, all around it were snowmobile tracks up the mountain :D

then I got stuck backing out (it was too narrow to turn around, it was down with a small private/contract plow I guess)

loads of fun digging out the car :D

Platoro, CO is like this too...most popular means of travel snowmobile, snowcat or dog sled!

Plus 1. Did it a couple times as a kid. My brother and I looked into it the last time he was up here in the winter and it was $. Funny that you can rent a car for $19/day.

I find this very surprising. For some reason, I thought you got around either by dogsled or snowmobile in the winter. :D

I had the choice of snowshoeing or snowmobiling (or dogsledding) when in Lac Beauport, Quebec last winter. Opted for the snowshoeing, which was very cool. Still want to try the others. I think I'd prefer to do dogsledding somewhere in the far North, where it's possible to see the aurora at the same time.

I did it once as a passenger. It was a blast. Other than the Pond's Cold Creme on our faces (to keep the wind from burning) I would do it again in a heart beat.

Most of the folks up there wear full face masks. Going 80-90mph across a frozen lake when it's around 0F, you don't want anything exposed.

I did this in the late 70's and I know we didn't get up to 80-90mph. We were in Michigan flying over a plowed field with lots of bumps.

Y'know, I have a photo somewhere of me and my sister shoveling snow when we were, erm, around 10 years old. Due to our short stature at the time - it kinda looked like that photo. (this was in Wisconsin). Those type banks continue to give me nightmares. :D

I don't think my dog would be too happy trying to drag me around.:D I do enjoy snowshoeing though. It's amazing what a workout it can be.

And on a completely different topic, I'm watching Glee and someone just shouted that McKinley "was a failed president.":D
