My day on the range with SuperG1955 revealed to me that I need to have a semi-auto with a shortened or lightened trigger pull, as I have an atrocious habit of expecting the trigger to break and jerking my wrist to anticipate recoil.

Easy enough habit to break - think about a self-defense scenario and a quick lesson from the speed shooters you see with a pistol. Pull from the holster and bring gun up far enough (but close to body) to get the back sight in range. Use the curvature of the grip (13 degrees for a reason) to help you sight while pushing out the weapon toward the target from your stance. Can dry-fire to work on trigger control - after a trigger pull, one should still be on target. Yes, I do practice this drill (in slow motion, no less).

Most of my live-fire practice is putting two shots on target from the holster. I don't care that I can put all shots on center mass at a leisurely pace. I care that I can do so in an emergency.

I wish I was that proficient. When I was younger and my Dad and I would go to the range I was ok, but nothing special. I suppose that could be a new hobby after a house is acquired. :-:

I'm not "proficient" and I know people who will consistently peg the cross-hatch in the center of the target - my focus is simply on fast threat neutralization. All shots for the day being scoreable makes me ^

Yeah, I hear you. At this point, I'd likely need actual instruction (in addition to craploads of practice) to get to that point.

Do you pull with one hand but are dominant with the other eye? That's something I had to get over.

I don't actually know enough to comment intelligently. I suppose I can chalk that up as another downside of living in California: oppressive gun ownership legislation.

What have I missed today while I have trolled the interwebs?

We can figure out eye-dominance pretty easily. Put your thumbs over one another and cross your hands to make a hole that's a small triangle. Stand at one side of the room, extend your arms, and use the triangle to target in on an object. Keeping the target in focus at all times, pull your arms back to your face fairly quickly and you'll come to an eye.
