You can always change to an earlier or later train, though it may involve buying a new ticket and cancelling your first one, and you'll have to pay any fare difference. (In that sense, Amtrak behaves like WN rather than, say, CO.) In my experience it's much easier to do this before you print the ticket.

The Quik-Trak machines used to offer you the opportunity to change trains to a train of the same type (i.e., Regional to Regional or Acela to Acela) but I don't know whether they do any more.

No. You can go to an Amtrak ticket window and switch your ticket over to the other train. There is a cut off time before a scheduled departure that you can make the switch. You may have to pay fare difference. Tickets are good for one year after issue so if you miss a train, you have that long to get it switched to another train.

Thanks, it sounds like 2 one-ways would be better than buying a round trip as my return is the one that might end up being earlier or later. If these are non-refundable fares, will I end up needing to buy a completely new ticket or would they allow me to just pay the difference between the non-refundable and the fare at the time? $49 each way to WAS is tough to beat...

I would always recommend buying two one-ways, as it gives you greater flexibility. I didn't know Amtrak offered non-refundable fares -- though I never buy my tickets that much ahead of time. As long as you don't print the ticket, I think you should be able to switch or cancel.

Round trip tickets have a value assigned to each leg so it shouldn't make a difference. You just pay the fare difference when you switch tickets. Keep in mind Amtrak fares are higher at the last moment point just like the airlines. The only issue with switch tickets is that there has to be space available on the train you are switching to. This can be difficult leaving WAS between 3 PM and 6 PM. Acela Express usually has a couple of seats open.
