There are plenty of other big market teams that have loaded rosters, bloated payrolls (admittedly not quite as high as the Yankees) and overcommercialism (we're talking about professional sports anyway, aren't we?) yet everyone feels the need to point a finger at the Yankees and ignore the other teams doing the same thing.
The NY area is one of the largest sports markets in the world. It also is an area with one of the highest costs of living in the country. Because of the higher cost of living, I think people in the area expect the best of the best - from schools to housing, to jobs, to professional sports teams. The Yankees (throw several other NYC/Northeast teams in here as well) are just spending the money to create the winning teams (the best of the best) that people paying premiums to live in this area have all grown to expect. Those of us who are fans of many of the other teams (cough, cough, mine) have to hope that our front offices are really smart and really lucky, and maybe we'll be competitive half the time. There is little margin for error. If you make a mistake (Travis Hafner, I'm looking at you) you pay for it for years. Meanwhile if the Yankees make a mistake, no worries, we'll just buy good players from the other teams. You are right that there are other teams that do this -- the Red Sox are this way now, and the Dodgers could be too -- but none have been as successful as long as the Yankees have. It's a bit of envy mixed with a lot of resentment of their (and their fans') arrogance. |
