My comment: I'm bothered by the notion that you guys did not seek to create a difference between the retail travel agent that people do use and that a niche does remain for and the corporate travel consultants which the roadwarriors despise. "Playing travel agent" for your friends is just that: you're playing. The retail travel industry is unfortunately being squeezed out of some points of competition due to cheaper distribution channels, but a competent retail agent is someone who works hard at their craft and earns certifications and completes professional education. Flying a lot does not a travel agent make. If the crew probably didn't feel like they were speaking to the enemy, I'd suggest that you all find a good old-fashioned retail agency owner or manager to have on as a guest so you see the other side of the equation. Travel agents who are good at the job and care about it fill a role in a client's life not unlike that of an attorney or doctor: they are trusted counsel in the field in which they excel. Walk-ins become long-term friends.

I'll drink and party with you any time, fozz, but I'm done listening. The family biz is retail travel and I'm diametrically opposed to the idea that just anyone can hack it in the travel business.

I don't doubt the need for travel agents and I, personally, will never go through hoops to help someone. I don't really consider myself doing travel agent duties. I help my friends find flights and give them info on navigating airports and such. In the case of my friends, if I didn't help them, they would just blindly by stuff on the website. By no means am i taking away biz from a real agent nor do I want to. I don't need the headache.

As for that particular episode, i really didn't have too much to contribute as i don't go through the lengths the others do.

A few years ago, I was doing a lot more when a few of my friends and I were biz partners, but that just fell into my role as part of the biz.

While I understand your frustration, the biggest reason travel agents have lost business is that, as a society, we are cheap and do not believe in paying for a service that used to be free. That, along with the penetration of the web has made it harder. I personally refuse to use travel agents as every time I have ever used them, they've screwed me in one way or another (yes, even the small retail ones). I am forced to use one for work, but even then i loathe them as they screw us all the time.

Just as there are good ones out there, there are a lot of bad ones, who jumped in when the money was there, out there as well.

Fixin' to be a  day.

I'm on 23 today and was hoping for a bump, but if all the other flights are sold-out i have no idea what my options are. Time to hit the drawing board.

LOL. I got called for not one, but two separate jury duty sessions next month (federal and local).

Someone just dropped out of F on 1433. Too bad I'm 3 on the EUA list.

Your flight is early enough where there might be other options. I think the 530p flight between EWR and IAH might have a seat or two.

There's a lot of last minute shenanigans going on today on these flights.

We're on Amtrak 155, the NE regional that leaves NYP at 9:05am. I'm boarding in NYP and CM and Gadfly are picking it up at ZFV.

How do I get my doctor to prescribe alcohol? That would be an excellent use of flexible spending account dollars.

Impressive - our aide pulled federal and I pulled county in May.

Are there any benefits for a SPG Gold to get a guaranteed room when a hotel is booked full online?

The AUS Sheraton is booked full for SXSWi and I'd really like to stay there.

It's a tentative date. We do mass distribution exercises for these types of things and since I'm a  at the cracker factory I got to schedule my preferred dates/times.

I'm guessing because we're in the NYC area we're high on a list somewhere. I'm sure it will change 100 times between now and then, but it's nice to know the distribution won't be while I'm not around. At least as of late last week when I gave my 2 Stanley Nickels.
