IMO Hampton Inns and HGI's are the best in the Hilton brand as far as the treatment of Diamond members and going out of their way to put you in the best room they have even if its not really that much better. I have had terrible stays at most Hiltons and a couple of DT's (but love the DT-Times Square) and am not sure why I keep going back but I seem to always give them the benefit of the doubt....I usually end up getting screwed though. If Starwoods wernt so expensive compared to the Hilton alternative I would status match and stay there but *woods arnt everywhere I go so I would lose the Plat and Diamond status after a year.

Really? 99% of the Hamptons and HGIs I stay in don't have a "best room." They have a bunch of rooms that are all identical.
I do pretty well with upgrades at full service Hilton and DoubleTree properties, although usually I have my MyWay preference set to the points, not the upgrade/breakfast. If I'm traveling for work, by myself, the upgrade to a larger room/suite usually isn't all that enjoyable, and the points come in handy for vacations. And I can always expense breakfast to work. However, about 80% of the time I get the points, and they still bump me to the executive floor and a nicer room, so it's the best of both worlds.
At Hamptons, the 250 points are worth more to me than a bottle of water and package of cookies. And at HGIs, it's rare I don't get the breakfast coupons even when I'm set to get the 750 points as my amenity.
