Yes. Tell him to set up a OnePass account, then call BR and have the OnePass number tagged to his PNR. That's all it takes. Again, he'll only earn EQMs+RDMs for the U.S. to TPE (and back) Segments, but will earn RDMs for the entire itinerary (including the segments to Vietnam).

It's possible. I've had several in the last couple of years. Aim for the 753 if you can get it.

I was even thinking I may buy IAH-SFO and grab a seat on VX for SFO-LAX.

If you are Plat and can be selective about day of the week and time, you have a good chance of an upgrade. If you are Gold, you still stand a decent chance if you can fly at an off-peak time. IAH-SFO is marginally worse, IME.

Thanks for the help ALCO, all he really cares about is getting a free domestic ticket to see his gf (or almost). Now its up to me to get him hooked and have a buddy to do mileage runs with.

I just calculated the RDMs one would earn for SFO-TPE-SGN-TPE-SFO (a rough guess at his U.S.--->Vietnam routing), and in business (BR no longer offers First), it works out to 19,596 RDMs (125% RDM Bonus for BR J Class). That's 4/5 of the way to a free domestic coach ticket (which would be a  use of miles, IMO). But, if it makes him happy...so it goes.

Plat?! HA! :D :p

I'm thinking I may do NW, as my route is going to take me AUS-LAX-IAH and they look to have decent availability in the front cabin. How does seating work on NW? Can I get a preferred seat before check-in?

WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter for the Canon 40D is $800.

(It lets you hook up a compatible GPS via USB Port for geo-tagging on the fly)

Yes. Just book the ticket on NW, then log into your reservation using the NW PNR on nwa.com and insert your OnePass number. You will then have access to priority seats.

Thanks!

You mentioned off-peak times, what would those be? It seems there are some strange "redeye" type flights out of L.A. but I'm not sure I can swing those.

Any good experiences out of ONT or SNA?

I guess I mean traditional off-peak days, like Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturday mornings. Redeyes also. I do not have much recent regular experience with SoCal airports, though, as most of my travel is to SFO. I have not missed an upgrade to/from California, though, since I was a Silver.

I got 5 days out this week IAH-LAX-IAH - whew.

Hmmm... any idea of the odds of a Platinum companion upgrade on IAH-ATL for a Sunday evening on a 735? I just got upgraded. My plan is to give the BF the upgrade at the airport if we don't get the companion upgrade. But it sure would be nice to get to sit together in the pointy end of the plane. I've never even tried the companion upgrade thing, as I'm always traveling by myself.

If you really want to get him the upgrade and you are originating out of IAH, get to the airport 3 hours prior to departure. That will put him on the list before the 3 hr EUA run.

Agreed - you should have decent luck. I have to say - the ONLY good thing I've seen about the fare increases are EUAs increasing.

I am also flying IAH-ATL on Sunday, but I don't find out about my upgrade until Thursday. :(
