I just checked with my other half here, and he confirmed that it was a glass of red wine in your pocket.

Trust me... that was the defining clue that we had, indeed, stumbled upon the Box at the pre-DO festivities at the PC. :)

A lot of people just fear confrontation. I got a lot of "ding" letters as a law student that had the wrong position on it when they rejected me. Scheduled phone calls and they don't pick up the phone. People not show to appointments.

Thanks. Concierge at Hilton Short Hills.

Some folks just have a problem doing that face to face. Never could understand it.
Mike, you sound like a guy with a lot going for you. You'll find something that fits. Good luck on you hunt.

Many thanks on all counts. If auto-rejects are the tool of those without the balls to do it in person, then every HR person that has seen my name in the last five months is without balls. I believe the most recent count w/r/t to *Wood applications is 0-for-22, either auto-rejects or non-callbacks.

<bows> - thank you. I keep telling myself that, and it's really starting to not have the same ring to it that it once did. I'm also telling myself that I should say screw the hotel thing. Now I'm starting to learn why personality and the ability to talk to people isn't landing me offers: because no one cares about those skills anymore.

Question for The Box: if a company advertises a position internally before releasing it to the outside, conducts an outside search, and then hires from inside anyway, is there something just not morally right about that? Eh, never mind...morals and conscience don't play a part.

Sorry to hear about it; I've sent out over 50 resumes and haven't had a single call back. I know there are good HR people out there, as the law of large numbers says their has to be, but I haven't met any of them. By and large, recruiting departments are staffed by imbeciles who have pushing paper as their primary job function and fail spectacularly at it. Keep the faith though; something has to break eventually.

Concerning your question, I think that is due mostly to the internal candidate being more viable than everyone they found outside. Or the HR rep being a moron. But that's just me.

Also, I just dropped my wife off at SAN for her flight to PHX and the place was absolutely dead. No line a WN checkin counters, no lines at either WN or UA/AS security lines, no cars dropping off or picking up, and that was just in Terminal 1. Terminal 2 appeared to be just as dead. I suppose that 9% drop that was reported today has started here in SAN.

LOL.

I just clicked on Mackieman's "pathetic FM". Never been to CLE? Never????

You haven't lived man.

We need a Box party on our deck.

In the 20 minutes between leaving and making it across campus to my room I had a VM telling me that I was no longer being considered. The really crappy part was that bars in Ithaca would run specials where you got cheap drinks for ding letters. Since that one was a phone call I didn't even get the cheap drink. :(

Sorry to hear about the ding. :td:

Wow. And I thought five hours (a nameless *Wood property) was something not to brag about.

You betcha. I was one of three finalists for a job last year...they flew me cross-country to CA, put me up, etc etc, said they would be in touch within the week...and NEVER GOT BACK TO ME. No phone call, no email, no letter, nothing (and yes, I followed up by both phone and email, no answers). I ended up getting the job that I liked even better than that one, but after you've spent that kind of money and time on one of your THREE final candidates, you can send them a two-sentence email. I eventually found out through a third party that they'd filled the position. Not impressed.

In other news, this may or may not be appropriate for the box, but it is college admissions day, and I must admit that I am SUPER PROUD of my budding-electrical-engineer little sister who gets to spend the next month deciding whether to go to Cornell, Columbia, MIT, Penn, Princeton, Duke, Georgia Tech, or Harvey Mudd! :D

I tend to avoid the northeast like I would the black plague, or maybe communism. :D Though I suppose someone might hurl something at me for suggesting that CLE is, "northeast." If I can manage to either get happy at this job or find a new job so I can finish paying off my wedding, I could actually start traveling to various deck parties around the contiguous 48. :)

Same thing happened to me about a year ago - except they flew me to FL.

I still joke about calling them to see if they've made a decision yet... :D

The Box has a metric for appropriate posting? ;)

zippypinhead Mar 31, 2009 8:55 pm

I've got a friend that believes he has the world's record for shortest interview. He showed up at the office on time. Best suit 'n tie and all that... Secretary rings the boss, he comes out of the office, shakes hands with my friend, places his hand on his shoulder and leads him into the office... And continues right on to another door depositing my buddy into the hallway.
Alone.
He said he stood there for a full minute till he figured out the "interview" was over.
