That's not a bad price at all for that itinerary. Last year ATL-IAH-ABQ cost me well over $550 for a weekend trip. I was going to be there for work, so my ticket was no big deal. We burned DL miles for an award for my partner rather than pay nearly $600 for his ticket.

Yawn, I need a vacation. All that time in EWR on Saturday dragging luggage around (and loosing car keys) really tells me I need to fly somewhere and escape.

South Florida with its lack of freeze/thaw cycle has some good roads as well.
I have almost fallen into a huge hole in the road where the metal plate was not secured properly. I actually called 911 to report it as emergency and a police car was there within 2 min to block it off. (this was on W flagler St) |

Exactly. I've come to view my lack of work-sponsored travel as a blessing. Where I end up on the weekends is up to me, and I spend the weekdays doing what everyone else already does... working. It's just that I don't equate travel with work. I equate travel with fun.
Also, having done 186K BIS two years ago, 231K BIS last year, and 147K BIS so far this year, it's not as if I haven't sampled what could be considered burnout-inducing levels of flying. When it's for leisure, it's a whole different ball-game. Granted, those who travel for work will have a large chunk of their FF miles subsidized by their employer, but what good are the miles if you dread having to spend anymore time away from home? Live in a crappy, festering pit, take a job that never sends you anywhere, and put the joy of travel back into your life. :D Flying may be totally routine for me most of the time now, but I still get very excited if we're crossing an ocean in the front cabin of the plane on a vacation. And I feel like I've got a pretty good deal going now. Sure, DC is just as festering as Houston is this time of year, but crappy Pit it ain't. I'm loving being there on the weekends now. And, with work still keeping me on the road, I'm still racking up the miles to use for personal trips. Our personal budget situation is just a temporary problem that will go away. And when it does, I anticipate some major redemption of those miles and hotel points.

Then, I can become a landlord, start collecting a check from her every month, and cut my monthly expenses associated with that place to just $250/month. That's very manageable.

How much did you end up saving? If it's well more than your perceived value of the FF miles available via promotions, you're in the clear.

I was able to get a full-size for $17/day before taxes/fees. Looks like I saved about $86 w/ taxes and fees a/i. My total price is $117.53.

And those expenses would probably be offset by the equity the tenant builds on your behalf. Hope that all works out quickly.
