The other two in my golf group no-showed. Playing a round with the caddy instead. Beautiful course. Many pix. |

I've done that one several times, and there is no good way to break up that trip. I remember spending the night in Utica once.

Still playing. Mostly bogey golf with a couple holes significantly worse. Put 3 in the drink on the floating green. Putted out well from the drop area. Beautiful course. Many pix. |

My parents were boring when it came to travel and vacations. Two weeks every summer, either Jersey Shore or OC MD. One car trip to Disney World. That's it. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I never even got on a plane until my first business trip in 1994.
Now I see the same thing happening with my sister and her family. They never go anywhere but down the Shore. My niece is four years old and she's never been anywhere except for Wildwood. I'm thinking of asking them if I can take her on a trip next summer, before she starts kindergarten. I think it would be fun to take her to Europe and it's certainly something her parents will never do. I'm not saying that kids necessarily need to travel overseas at a young age, and perhaps she will be too young to really appreciate it, but I think early exposure to different environments is important.

I agree with you -- early exposure to experiences help kids develop a more 'rounded' perspective on things. The 'value' may not be evident at the time, but you'd be surprised what kids can remember from a very young age! As I always say 'you only know what you know' -- ie. based on whatever your own experience is! Both of mine have been traveling on planes since a few wks old & they are both great travelers now!^ As for Europe -- I would wait until she's a bit older -- the attention span may not be there. However, if the child is very precocious & 'mature' for her age -- I'd say 'go for it'. Then again, my son went to the Amazon at 5 y.o. & was totally game for it!^
Did it expand my horizons, get me excited about geography, history, foreign cultures, other languages, and airplanes? Did it make it clear to me that the world larger than a day's driving radius from my home would be a huge part of my life? And is all that important? You bet. Just knowing what's out there - or more importantly, how little you yourself know or represent in the larger scheme - is so important. But I'm preaching to the choir here...so will shut up now. :) |

(My parents did it QUITE a few many more times than that - they were pretty faithful about coming to our concerts/shows/operas, etc. And as I said earlier, their roadtrip tolerance is amazingly high.) It's exactly 10 hours from door to door and yes, it does suck. Phudnik is right - it really should be done in one go. You can leave at a non- hour in the morning and make it by dinner and then pass out. I suppose the one good thing about all these roadtrips was that we did have pretty good family bonding. And thankfully, none of us were all that tall or long-legged (at the time). There was a lot of singing (including the complete recitations of entire Broadway musicals and Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, music and dialogue). I ended up writing my "tell us about a tradition in your family/culture/town" essay for my Stanford application about road trips with the fam. It was pretty tongue in cheek because I was pretty burned out after all the rest of the college applications, but apparently they liked it well enough... |

Could have done the brewery tour at Matt Brewing Company (Sarnac, plus they are a outsource provider for other companies). :-:
Could have ate at Brooks BBQ and then visited the Ommegang brewery (and the baseball hall of fame). :-: |
