If he did so as ordered by his government (which I doubt). The Qatari government has been fairly supportive of the U.S. efforts to round-up terrorists in the Middle East, though there is some question as to whether or not they are covering up if some of the royal family and government officials have terrorist ties.

The U.S. officials that deal with Qatar were grilled on those points but disagreed and said that Qatar has been a wonderful supporter.

There's a difference between concerted state action and rogue actors. I doubt the government of Qatar chose some mid-level diplomatic flunky to sign their death-warrants with.

I concur. Unless they can revoke his immunity and 'release' him to stand trial here, I suspect that he'll be turned over to Qatar to deal with. It'll ruffle feathers here with a lot of rhetoric, but there may be longer term consequences on diplomatic travel and immunity.

In other words, he was exempt from normal TSA screening procedures, correct?

Maybe he read the TSA's manual on ow to avoid security at an airport near you!!

Unless the situation has changed, U.S. servicemembers deployed to Qatar operate under a mandate that they are the personally invited guests of the Emir of Qatar. That was one of the first things I was told when I landed at al-Udeid in 2004.

Some of us have schedules permitting us to travel at any time over the summer ;)

In Qatari-speak, "3rd secretary and vice-consul" means "the cousin of someone who is actually important." If this guy were more than a mid-level diplomatic flunky, he'd be enjoying his Med Villa, pricey Italian prostitutes, and fine single-malts/cognacs, rather than desk jockeying in the heart of the great Satan and plotting epic dooshbaggery.

Qatar has been pretty supportive, but I'll say this: there is a ban on taking photos of buildings that fly the Qatari national flag. The largest US flag you've ever seen flying at a car dealership is tiny compared to the Qatari flag that flies from the top of al-Jazeera's headquarters building in downtown Doha.
