Pretty easy choice for a back-up, as I'm cleaning out my HHonors account and avoiding that craptacular program/chain for the foreseeable future.

I use Starwood as my backup. I never caught the HHonors bug, although I have a small balance.

I somehow managed to rack up 150,000 HHonors points over the past two years. Am cleaning out the account in a trade for some BA miles.

I don't think I'll ever drop SPG as a primary, unless they gut the program/benefits - too many great hotels in far-flung places that I find appealing. IMHO, the only other chain that has such exotic properties in odd locales is Accor (mainly Novotels and Sofitels).

There are a bunch of Hyatt properties that we can use here in So Cal. By the time we are said and done with the Hawaii trips we take and the weekend trips we typically take with our alcoholic friends, Diamond is easy. Of course, last year, we also easily got Starwood PLT again after I got a status match. Work stays enhance my stay history at SPG places.

As a purely leisure traveler, SPG properties (existing or planned) in locations like Urubamba, Ulaanbaatar, El Calafate, Isle of Pines (New Caledonia), Split, Queenstown, Seychelles, Mauritius, etc., are what attract me to the SPG currency.

It does look like the Summerfield here at the Galleria is pretty cheap on weekends, though. I may end up stocking up on some promo 5K bonuses. ^

By all means, sign up for the fasttrack to Diamond promo outlined in the Hyatt board. When you stay at one of the FS properties out of the US as a Diamond you will not be disappointed.

In other words, he was exempt from normal TSA screening procedures, correct?

when we left our 1400 sf suite to take our tea in London, we realized that the Diamond status was worth it. ^
