As most of you know, I have done a couple cross country amtrak trips, improving grade crossing between DAL and AUS won't help at all, the worst parts are EAST of DFW. From Mineola up through Arkansas is a terrible track, they have improved parts and made it better but you can tell when you hit that 100 year old track.

I don't want to take this to OMNI/PR, but.....

I believe there is enough antipathy towards Perry that, if the match-up is between Perry and White, White stands a decent shot of winning. I doubt a Perry candidacy would do much to motivate a significant segment of Republican voters on election day.
With regard to the Republican field, however, I'm not a particular fan of Hutchinson. At a minimum, her husband is with V&E...and I've never met anyone from V&E that I thought was particularly impressive. The fact that KBH apparently has concerns me.

Neither White nor Shami are good candidates in my opinion. White has no personality really and that'll be his downfall.

I thought Texas' (TxDOT's) failure to have a meaningful HS Rail plan (a passenger rail division of TxDOT wasn't formed until a few months ago) resulted in us being allocated almost none of the $8bn allocated to rail under the stimulus package. IIRC, Florida, Illinois, and California received the bulk of the funds, as they had developed more than the basic rudiments of a plan (like a plan for securing right-of-way, and environmental impact studies).

Agree, in general. However, I don't think White's downfall is his personality; rather, I think that it is a combination of (i) instituting red light cameras throughout Houston; (ii) being in bed with developers and selling out to them; (iii) his apparent love for illegal immigrants; and (iv) his inability to make any difficult decision that could cost Houston taxpayers additional monies (motivated, no doubt, in part to get his future electoral hopes alive). Sure, he performed decently during Ike (and didn't he end up apologizing for using "salty language"? Seriously...be a man and don't apologize!), but outside of that, I can't think of a thing the guy did that was good for Houston as a whole.

When I run for Mayor of Houston, my entire platform will consist of selling Dallas to wealthy foreign interests (who promise to convert it into a toxic waste dump), then using the proceeds to relocate the entire population of Houston to San Diego.
