This eruption may last for months. If you're stuck somewhere right now, I'd look for a train to Spain or Italy, and try to get out from there.

Just in case any of you think we're being big scaredy-cats over here in Europe, this is what volcanic ash is all about:

Looks like everything to Europe is cancelled tonight, except for LIS and MAD. The flight to LIS has been upgraded to a 764, and both flights to MAD have been upgraded to 764s.

Also looks like there was going to be an additional flight to FCO (flight 1950), but it has been cancelled...

Wow, you're right. Not even BCN or FCO for tonite. Right now about 16 standbys on the LIS and 26 on the MAD.

---
Edit:

If you can't get to Europe, at least you can go to EPCOT center. CO's upgraded at least 3 EWR-MCO flights today from 753 to 764: CO292, CO692, CO57.

They've added a second flight to Lisbon since I looked at noon today, a 762 operating as 1953.

So, 764 + 762 to LIS, and 764 x 2 to MAD for tonite. That's more like it.

How will they bring the 2nd craft back from LIS? Presumably they have one crew in LIS to bring back one of the 767s. But how are they going to bring the second one back?

A crew could be deadheading over on one of the flights. There are also a fair amount of pilots stuck in Europe right now when you think about all of the crews who got stranded over there waiting for their inbound flights that never made it in. In theory one of those crews could've been repositioned. In addition, they are now sending a 3rd 764 to MAD tonight as well from the looks of it.

reward travel from FCO

I'm on a CO reward travel ticket through BRU and LHR Monday on the way to LAX with two separate partner airlines Brussels Airline and Virgin Atlantic. I don't have a chance do I? I'm going to get a sim card for the phone tomorrow and start calling around but I bet reward travel out of FCO/Lisbon/Madrid is all gobbled up. Any perspective?

CO has ONE EWR flight out of FCO daily, ugh!

CO40 EWR-FCO also 764, upgraded from 762 on schedule; as MXP also cancelled.
There are some more upgrades/special flights:

CO62 EWR-MAD normally 752, now 764
CO144 EWR-MAD normally 752, now 764
special flight CO1955 EWR-MAD, 764

special flight CO1950 EWR-FCO, 764
as stated above, CO40 EWR-FCO normally 762, now 764

CO16 EWR-GLA mentioned above was cancelled.

Anyone have a guess as to why CO120 EWR-BCN was cancelled? Has the volcanic ash reached that part of Spain?

Also:

CO64 EWR-LIS usually 752, now 764
special flight CO1953 EWR-LIS 762

The extra LIS flight is showing up for tomorrow back to EWR, but the MAD one isn't. Any ideas why?

Both the original FCO and the special flight are canceled for tomorrow back to EWR along with BCN. MAD and LIS appear to be operating.

I have family stuck in AMS so I'm paying pretty close attention to the whole situation.

Although I should have bothered to read the thread before looking up everything you just said (@:-)), I did notice there is an additional flight to MAD tonight operating with 764 as CO1955, but the only ones showing up for tomorrow are the 2 usual flights with the upgraded 764's.

Thanks... I didn't see 1955 when I posted a couple hours ago. They must have added it fairly recently. So, that's three 764s for MAD tonite.

Spain's airspace was shut down for a portion of the day earlier and CO canceled everything. Same with the Northern Italy airspace and FCO. CO looks to have jumped the gun by canceling both of those routes, as both airports are open and other carriers are sending flights over tonight.

I could be wrong on this completely, but I think the way the timing of it worked out, the vast majority of the Europe to US flights were able to get out, and by then of course the cancellations on the US to Europe flights were in full force. It is the EU carriers that have planes stuck over here. There might by a 757 stuck at Heathrow, but I'd be surprised if CO has many birds beyond that in Europe.
