Doh, I totally forgot about this one -- didn't put it on my calendar. If it's still possible without impacting the reservation, I'd love to join y'all... if not, I'll understand. :)

techgirl Dec 22, 2006 6:31 am

Dave - should be fine. I'm calling this morning so I'll post here once I hear back. (I'll likely just make it for eight in case anyone else decides to join at the last minute!)

techgirl Dec 22, 2006 11:16 am

Confirmed -

Tomorrow, party of 8 - 11 am at Jaspers

Reservation is in my name - it looks like its all regulars so we should have no problems locating each other.

Angelika schedule for tomorrow:

Babel R (142 min.)
4:00 PM 7:30 PM 10:30 PM

Miracle on 34th Street
5:30 PM

The Good Shepherd R (157 min.)
11:20 AM 12:15 PM 2:40 PM 3:35 PM 6:00 PM 7:00 PM 9:20 PM 10:20 PM

The History Boys R (122 min.)
11:00 AM 1:30 PM 7:10 PM 9:40 PM

The Queen PG13 (97 min.)
12:30 PM 3:00 PM

Volver R (111 min.)
12:00 PM 2:30 PM 5:00 PM 7:30 PM 10:00 PM
I'm thinking about seeing the 1:30 showing of The History Boys or the 2:30 showing of Volver if anyone wants to join me. (I want to see The Good Shepard too but its on just about every screen in the country so no use wasting an Angelika trip!)

And the Angelika serves beer/wine AND allows you to take it into the theatre!

Illini_Fan Dec 22, 2006 2:21 pm

I had hoped to see History Boys on Broadway, but never got time that last time I was in NYC, so I'd be game for that.

Of course, I'm never against sitting through a Penelope Cruz viewing, either :)

techgirl Dec 22, 2006 8:38 pm

The eighth spot is filled with a mystery guest. We shall see you guys tomorrow!

bpauker Dec 23, 2006 8:01 am

Unfortunately, I must back out at the last minute. I woke up yesterday with sinus issues, and they have only managed to worsen this morning. I'm going to stay at home this morning (and probably all day), I think. Have fun, and I'll see you next month...

techgirl Dec 23, 2006 8:09 am

Ugh Kev... I've had that crud on and off for six weeks now. Take some Mucinex and sleep!

Hope you feel better soon!

techgirl Dec 24, 2006 2:24 pm

Great to see everyone yesterday - and happy holidays to those we missed.

I'm hoping someone will step up to plan January/February/March. Due to the new venture launching, I *may* be able to attend either or both (depending on date) but there is NO way I can plan again until at least April due to pure insanity.

Article in yesterday's paper about this past June's gathering spot.

PONDER – For the venerable Ranchman's Cafe, a long overdue face-lift means triple the space through an expansion of the dining area and the addition of a patio and butcher shop.

The downtown institution continues to draw visitors from across the globe, but it hasn't undergone a significant renovation since 1978, when it added restrooms and indoor plumbing.

Well shoot... if we had known that place had indoor plumbing, we might have put in an appearance. ;)

January Gathering

In the midst of some drunk posting (hey, if the drunk dialers can have their fun, so can we!), we interrupt this program to bring you an important message.

You are hereby cordially invited to the January gathering of the masses. Although it's very unusual to repeat a location so soon after we'd visited previously, this is a special occasion.

On Sunday January 14th (yes, a change from when I originally wrote this post) at 12 noon, we will gather at The Tomato in Denton (corner of Hickory and Fry) for a farewell pizza feast. Why a farewell? This week, the owners of The Tomato, along with several other businesses on Fry, received an eviction notice indicating that they must be out of the building by January 31. They're closing up shop. While it's still unclear if they'll reopen someplace else, we do know that they'll be closing at this location, and possibly for good.

Therefore, with stapler in hand, I'll be parking my butt on a seat and eating some darn good pizza one last time before they go.

Again, this'll be Sunday, January 14th at 12 noon at The Tomato in Denton.

Y'all in?

Note: For what it's worth, it took me quite a while to find a source to confirm this was in fact accurate. There have been rumors flying for years about the restaurant closing. Here's the official word from the Denton Record-Chronicle.

techgirl Jan 6, 2007 5:52 am

I should be free to attend this one if my current schedule holds.

The closing of the Tomato will be a sad day for me. As many of you know, I worked on my second undergrad and first masters at UNT. I had several classes in that old three story colonial facing Fry Street and we would always do the "dash" during our 20 minute class break. (The "dash" for the uninitated was the habit grad students had of making the 1 minute walk to the Tomato (then "The Flying Tomato"), ordering something fast (like breadsticks) along with a pitcher of Shiner, and downing both to have the fuel to survive the second half of a long evening lecture.

We b-school types were always out of place - on the liberal UNT campus in general, but especially among the purple haired art students and weed smoking D&D/Magic players upstairs on that rickety balcony.

A good farewell for their great pizza (and my theories about the sauce) is well deserved. ^ ^ ^

It is truly sad to see this place shut its doors. :td: :td: :td:
