It's possible that the Italian parent company may not know this, but they are begging for major, major, major legal trouble with these. Even if the best candidate turns out to be a 36-year-old guy, they would (especially after your post, which has by now been immortalized by several Internet archiving services and the above quoting even if you go back and edit it) have a devil of a time proving that that they didn't turn down a 42-year-old woman because she didn't meet these two "requirements" (not even "desirable characteristics," but out-and-out "requirements"). If you're not yet in a position there to clue them in that this crosses clear and unambiguous legal boundaries as well as ethical ones, somebody else ought to. (I am assuming that you don't personally support this sort of discrimination, but you might want to confirm that for the record.)

P.S. If that wasn't bad enough, there's enough information in your post for someone in your industry to know exactly what company it is.

At some point I was contemplating a move to Italy and started looking around Monster.com for jobs. Most every posting I saw had a specific age bucket attached to it. I guess while this sort of thing may be frowned upon here, it seems to be common practice there. But yea, I agree with you. This Italian company is in need of some legal counseling.

I just copied and pasted what I was given. Whoever wrote the profile did not realize that the profile was to be used for the US and that what it is perfectly normal in Italy is considered discriminating in the US. I've deleted those requirements. Thank you all for letting me know, even though I would have preferred a PM as someone else did yesterday.

just out of curiosity: How much success have people had with this thread? Has it actually worked out for anyone? I find it interesting if networking not based on personal relationships actually has a chance against 'real' job networks..

This thread just doesn't get the traffic that other places like Indeed, Vault, Craigslist and Monster get. Of course, I swear that none of those sites work either (personal experience only), so who knows.

Maybe its like the "Good Deals" MR threads, where all of the good jobs get sent via PM only, so they never make it to the FT masses

Such job adverts are also illegal in EU territory.
The fact that they are still pretty much the norm in many (most?) countries, doesn't mean that they aren't against the law.

Like any other kind of job networking, posting here is just part of the equation.

There have been 33K page views of this thread and a job applicant only needs one of those views in a position to hire s/he.
