sort of off topic here but since this has to do with people in FT and jobs, I am here for now.

I saw a thread in travel Buzz called, "Ever quit a job without having a new one?" and I felt the need to comment.

note: the MOD who closed the thread quoted below pointed us all here by pasting in a link to this very thread, so here I be to continue it if and where it applies.

Yes, I have both quit and been let go of jobs without having a new one. It is not something you want to happen to you but you get marked and once marked there are only a few ways out:

1) move to a new country. Completely start over!
2) lie on your resume
3) change careers--ie, start your own business
4) accept the pain of a very low paying job
5) win lottery.

I have been in marketing since way back when, but often times, my work was set up as freelance and contractural. Well, there's nothing "contract" about it and I have made do with what came up. But when you are hired thru an agency or as a temp, you are in a pickle from day one! HR wants you either in or out and you are on the hot seat all the time. You make one mistake--even that which a normal employee makes daily, and you could be ousted! I have seen it with temps, and those here who happen to be in Graphic Design, among other chosen career paths, know exactly what I am talking about.

Sure, you can score some big cash at those high hourly rates and OT, but you get no benefits, have no reason to have loyalty and you cannot get to live there like all the full timers. freedom? Well, that's just for people who HAVE the money! If you are in and out of work--even not by choice--it is not easy to get a rhythm going unless THAT is your rythym! (for some young, single, childless persons, it just as well may be!)

I have been a good employee at most places I have worked or freelanced and have NOT chosen to be the freelancer or temp, but it's in my work history so it is always done "to" me. By the time I leave, I get things like, "Well, we loved you and you did a great job but things are changing here and, blah blah blah."

NEXT!

The real question should be:
Have you ever had a job you liked and could actually stay?

My answer: No, not yet.
I'm 42.
I call myself a marketing consultant and do pull in some money here and there. It works but gawd, it's like trying to get my missing miles from some botched airline promo--allll the freakin time!

I have more than 20 years IT Audit/Risk and Control experience, including 12 years with a Big 4 firm in UK and Eastern Europe (4 years as IT Audit Partner)and 8 years Internal IT Audit with UK and US Banks.

Currently Managing Director of IT Audit start up in Russia.

Looking to relocate back to UK/Western Europe but would also consider US. Head of IT Internal Audit or similar position preferred. Project/contract work also a possibility.

To update my Post #150 last year suggesting that the CNMI OAG -- not AGO as I mistakenly wrote, see 1 CMC § 2151 -- seemed to be in perpetual need of some good Assistant Attorneys General for its Civil & Criminal Divisions, I've found out that they have a listing with the National Association for Law Placement (NALP).

The OAG website listed in the above NALP form hasn't been updated for a couple of years, though. They must be low on cash. :)

I'm also aware that they seem to need a civil chief, and that taking and passing the CNMI bar exam (see the NALP form) would markedly enhance one's chance of being hired. Perhaps a bar exam mileage run, anyone? I'll be glad to show you around after the test, and may put in a good word for you with the AG.

There are only six lawyers at the Palau OAG, compared to twenty at the CNMI OAG on Saipan. But I must concede that, however great the diving is here, it is even better in the Republic of Palau.

These NALP links should be valid through the end of 2008, with updated ones possibly issued early in 2008.

I'll be PM'ing a few of you here whom have listed openings at their workplaces but I'm also curious to hear some advise from people willing to offer it.


I'm currently happily employed at a local company with a fairly decent job position but with somewhat lacking compensation and benefits thats why I'm in the market to get a better job.


I've got a dual bachelors from Rutgers University and a masters from NJIT in Information Systems. I've been with my current job "service" job for over 4 years. Before that I was in retail for two years all while going through college. Recently I have been getting really involved in the transportation industry and have published an article on the use of technology at the firm. Also am writing another article for the same publication for the November issue about a conference I just attended last week. I'm no stranger to getting such publicity as I've been featured twice already in automotive magazines about my hobby. Most recent one had a full page article on one of my "hobby" web sites.



Ideally, I am looking for a technology job but more on analysis and design side than programming side. Sadly all jobs I've looked into so far require you to have extensive knowledge of various languages that I have really no interest in getting into. While I studied them in college and some experience working with them, thats not what I want to do for a living.



I am also looking for a job that requires 50% + travel. I've been traveling a lot lately on my own, but its getting expensive... yet I keep on doing it because I love it. The ideal job would have lots of travel throughout the US and the world for that matter.



The reason why I'm not at my dream job yet I think is mainly because I'm afraid of losing the job that I have without getting a new one. Five years ago I left retail and thought I would rebound quickly but six months later I was desparate for another job just to pay school bills. I don't ever want to go through that again. That being said I'm too comfortable with my current job and am either lazy or stupid not to look for something better. Based on your experience guys what would be the most logical and somewhat "safe" option to pursue. Which jobs should I go after aggresively and which should I not bother with?



I think one day I'll just move away from North Jersey and start something totally new.... but I don't want to make unnecessary sacrifices and am shooting more for a smooth transition into something better.

I'm a San Francisco Bay Area-based media relations consultant, specializing in motorsports. Currently, I'm working with a Texas sports car racing team, but I'm looking for additional consultancy opportunities - or even the right full-time position.

I'm skilled in all facets of the business, especially writing and Web site content creation. I'm passionate about my clients and the stories they have to tell - which have been told in AutoWeek, USA Today, Road & Track, SI.com and dozens of other local, regional and national media outlets.

Being that I'm posting this on FT, I'm also comfortable with as much travel as may be necessary. :)

Hello, folks!

Was wondering if anyone could assist a rookie about to graduate from college with how to obtain a traveling job. I will investigate consulting in my final semester, but of course, I would love to hear any insight anyone could provide.

I will graduate in Fall 2007 from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in English with Honors in the major. I completed my honor's thesis last year. I have taught kids French at a summer program for the last six summers, with the role of Foreign Language Department Chair in 2005 and 2006 and the Dean of Students this summer. I have an on-campus job providing IT support to dormitory students during the year.

I can offer immense experience and ability with analytical and problem solving skills, as well as deep knowledge of networks, software, and operating systems. I speak fluent French and Spanish.

If anyone has any information about specific positions to research, I'd love to hear from you via PM.
