A friendly reminder that if you are local or coming into town on Saturday for this event, the 16th Drunk DO is taking place the night before and you are welcome to join us at that as well. It will be a semi-virtual event, with an in-person option in Queens (and of course the Zoom).

Putting myself down as an enthusiastic maybe. I have flights and hotels booked, but may have to cancel depending on how other factors play out in the next few weeks. Hope to see everyone there!

Deli update: I reached out to the catering manager at Katz's Delicatessen and just heard back:

Hi GW,
Thanks for your interest in joining us at Katz's Deli!
On weekends (Sunday Nov 7th) we have very limited availability for reservations -
We would be able to confirm this reservation if your group can commit to arriving at 11:30 am with the sampler platter menu option

This would require a 10% deposit.
Let us know if you would like to proceed!
I don't mind putting down the deposit if nobody objects to this course of action. The sampler platter has most of their classics and is $40 per person (more info below). I am sure we can still get a can or few of Cel-Ray. I would like to get back to her today or tomorrow so if anyone objects please make it known ASAP.

On clloser examinationi of the website, ir says re the $40 per person "*Note that prices do not include NY Sales Tax & Gratuity".

. The tax comes to 8.75%. ($3.50) Tipping in New York City restaurants is usually 15% of the after-tax bill. The total would be $50 per person. That is fine for some people but too expensive for others. That is why on all the Do's I arranged I made certain that everyone could order whatever he wants and we all got separate tabs.

That's a very good point. However given that the only other deli that can definitely accommodate a group reservation in advance (Ben's) is now closed on weekends, I think the premium here goes towards table service and use of their private room.

If we don't do a group reservation, we will have to chance it the day of the event. I am not opposed to that, but it may result in having to wait or sit at separate tables. This is simply an option that we have

I'd be fine with 11:30 and getting the platter.

But do we have at least 10 people committed?

We were close. We're now a little further away from 10 and I am going to hold off. At least two of the "maybe" people are more like "probable" but that still doesn't get us to 10... so I will hold off on responding.

As it stands we have 7 people confirmed. I know that Sarge's can handle a walk-in party of that size.

Ben's, too, wanted a fixed price dinner. Most restaurants prefer that as it gives them less work and a bigger profit. I talked them into just reserving the room for us and letting everyone order what he wants and get his own tab. it is worth a try at Katz (of course, it would have to be agreed on before-hand). Think of it this way: If you really were not interested in the food and were coming simply to be with other FTers, how would you feel about forking out $50 when a hot dog, a knish, and a soda would satisfy you?

You are right. I will try to do that... if we get closer to the minimum of 10 people again. At this time I can't confirm anything with them.

However if we are under 10, we can certainly walk in to just about any deli that's open and be seated at one or two tables. As I have said, I am absolutely not opposed to this. We'll see what happens... watch this space.

I moved myself from the maybe to the yes column. Looking forward to meeting people!

EDIT: And the Katz's option looks good to me!

Confirming for this DO with myself and Mrs. DELee and updated wiki accordingly.

We will not be doing a platter. We are interested in Katz's.

There are now 10 people on the list. I am emailing the manager from Katz's again, but taking Dovster's advice and insisting on à la carte ordering and also requesting individual checks. I am not optimistic but it does not hurt to ask. If their answer is no, I will create a poll to help us choose a possible establishment(s).

As I mentioned in another post, there is some interest in a bodega cat hunt afterwards. I am not sure if any bodegas in lower Manhattan will have cats, however -- we may have better luck further uptown.

I have heard back from Katz's and unfortunately they cannot offer us a reservation. However they encouraged us to walk in, so they remain an option. As noted upthread, Ben's is closed on weekends.

With that in mind, I would like to gauge interest for each deli. If you are confirmed to attend, please fill out this very brief form: FT Deli Survey

(If you are not confirmed, please do not fill out the form. Alternatively, change your plans so you can join us!)

If there is a tie, dhammer53 will cast the tiebreaking vote. As the organizer I get to make this type of decision

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, please consider joining us the night before for the 16th OMNI bugger-I-am-drunk DO, which will take place both virtually over Zoom and in Queens (most likely in LIC).
