I have been hoping to plan an event like this for quite some time, so allow me to welcome you to the New York City Delicatessen DO! Please join me for one of my favorite cuisines, the Kosher Delicatessen, on Sunday, November 7th, 2021. This event is in conjunction with the 16th OMNI Bugger-I-Am-Drunk DO the night before.
The plan is very simple: get lunch at a classic Jewish-style delicatessen in Manhattan. There are a number of options, and in the coming days I will find out which places can accommodate a large group. Unfortunately it appears the Second Avenue Deli (my first choice) may not be able to seat such a large group, however there are other places we could go, including Ben's (which I don't love, but has successfully hosted a DO in the past).
Please indicate your interest in attending using the wiki above. As the date approaches, we will finalize the details and determine a location. I look forward to seeing you at the deli

I am a huge fan of Sarge's. They're pretty great! I'd love to fly in for a Deli Do, but I'll be in CA that weekend!

Sorry, but I don't think I will make this, as I am expecting hoping to be on a cruise. Enjoy, everybody!

I think I should be able to make it! I've put myself down as a maybe but hope to firm that up over the next week or so. It would be fun!
I was supposed to do the CowDO in Buenos Aires in September 2019, but a Delta meltdown at ATL caused me to have an unexpected overnight there, and I ended up missing the first day's activities. Had to work after that so couldn't partake in any of the festivities. So this would be a nice opportunity to make up for that!

Count me in. Second Avenue Deli is my favorite. I am also curious about the new location of Pastrami Queen, which is what used to be Fine and Shapiro's.
I know this is a minority opinion but I find Katz's underwhelming, probably because I don't particularly like pastrami. (Tongue is my deli meat of choice.)

while I can't remember the last time I had tongue, I do remember that I enjoy it ... that said, I bought one and cooked it (boiled w pickling spices, iirc) very early in my relationship with the now-Mrs767, and I don't think she has yet forgiven me

The advantages:
1, The food was delicious.
2, It has a great location, being in easy walking distance from anywhere in mid-Manhattan.
3. Once we had an approximate number of attendees it reserved a private room for us, with the flow over being seated at tables adjacent to that room.
4. It agreed that every person could order whatever he wants and that each of us would get his own tab.
5. The prices were very reasonable.

I have found Ben's inconsistent in quality. I grew up going to their (now defunct) branch in Baldwin. I've had some good meals at the Manhattan one, which is often a convenient stop to get a takeout dinner for the train back to DC. But I also had some terrible kishke there a while ago and their chopped liver is not what it used to be. Even so, it's still better than what passes for Jewish deli in northern Virginia. (For the record, Perlie's in Richmond is pretty good other than the ridiculous amount of dill they put in their matzoh ball soup.)

I don't know why you would give Ben's a pass. My experience with it was excellent. The only drawback is that it does not have a koshrut certificate because it is open on Saturdays. The food, itself, is kosher.

Of course, I think most delis like that in Manhattan are bound to be expensive. Katz's is certainly pricey.
I think Second Ave. Deli is my favorite in the genre.
