In 2017, at the first renewal of the 2016 Chase Sapphire Reserve card,* no retention offers have been forthcoming. It appears that Chase is not offering retention bonuses on this card at this time, and will cancel the card at the cardholders request without further ado.

*A retention offer has been reported (though it's minimal): https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/28917524-post376.html

Posts 333 and 327 discuss a fee credit issued by Chase when cancelling the card. These have been called both "Annual Fee Refund" and "Membership Fee Credit."

This thread discusses the timing of both cancelling and product changing (downgrading to Sapphire Preferred) in order to 1) Keep from paying the $450 annual fee, and 2) possibly get a 2018 $300 travel credit before cancelling.

The rules changed for the travel credit on cards issued in May 2017, making the travel credit a calendar year issuance rather than a Dec statement to Dec Statement issuance.

The nuances discussed within this thread include changing your billing date, fees posting on the 1st of the month, and the 30 day window to cancel/60 day window to product change.

Chase restricts you to just one Sapphire family card (you can only have Chase Sapphire OR Chase Sapphire Preferred OR Chase Sapphire Reserve)

Data points suggest you can be approved for both CSP and CSR if you apply for them on the same day. Anyway, my response was to a comment about applying for SW cards--not Sapphire--so the point is moot.

Ok you may be that person, but what was the result? Retention bonus or not?

I know there's no hard number, but I suspect that there's a "soft" limit for each individual, based on total CL, income, score, maybe some other factors. The most I've heard of is 7 or 8 personal cards.

Did you get a bonus? Or are you insinuating here that you want to reduce your point balance in the hopes of getting one?

RNE, will throw down the gauntlet when my annual fee hits, October 1.

It's more a limit on the number of cards they offer than the ones they offer a customer.

Personal: Ritz, Marriott, IHG, Hyatt, Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, CSP, Amazon

Business: Marriott, Ink Cash

I'll be losing United Silver soon and so my next in-branch approval might be used on a United card. Ritz may go depending on how many times I can use the $100 off air fare for 2 benefit this year.

I'm betting that Chase has modeled how much breakage in Ultimate Rewards points they may generate from forcing people to either retain the Chase Sapphire Reserve card or risk losing the UR points collected. And so I don't expect that they will very generous at all with renewal/retention offers on the CSR for those CSR customers whose only UR-earning/retaining card is the CSR.

I think most people whose only UR earning card is the CSR will probably use the points if they are going to cancel it.

Probably, but such (i.e. CSR-as-only-Sapphire-card) canceling customers in the aggregate will still be contributing to Chase getting some breakage benefits from this policy.

How? Because they did not utilize the 1 to 1.5 travel booking benefits? I imagine more than 50% of the CSR cardholders dont use this benefit or use it in full balance of their UR pts. This includes those who hold CSP and Ink Plus. By that definition Chase has been getting breakage from UR program all along, CSR not matters.

just wondering has anybody attempted to apply for the CSP while having the reserve? I know of their rule but would it hurt to try?
