However, later the same day I also requested the credit by Secure Message (for "baggage fees) and it was approved. Very YMMV now but still doable. 2/10/2017
Southwest Airlines GCs work fairly easily. I've generally bought them for $150 and said they're excess baggage fees.

So I was going through the T&C that came with my new Ritz card and noticed this one the Chase website:
"Each account anniversary year you make purchases totaling $10,000 or more, including during your first account anniversary year, you will qualify for Gold Elite Status through December 31 of the following year." (It also says the same thing concerning Platinum and a $75,000 spend)
In my case, I applied for this last month (September 2016) and already spent more than $80,000 on this. How I interpret the T&C, that means I should have Platinum status all the way until December 2017--effectively giving me ~14 months.
Would I be correct in assuming that if I waited until January 2017 to apply (and then met the same spend requirements), that I would have kept Platinum status all the way until December 2018--effectively giving me ~23 months?
If so, does this mean it would be best for applicants to only apply for this card in January in order to maximize the Gold/Platinum status achieved by spending $10,000/$75,000 during that first Account Anniversary Year?

The way I read it, and they way I think it is implemented - the cut off point is the end of your card year. In your case the end of your card year will be September 2017, and the status will carry until December 2018*. That would be the case at least for the Gold status (which you get automatically in the first year), and the trigger for the second year status is the spend in the first year. I assume it would be the same for Platinum (though not know it for sure).
The downside of applying in January would be the "loss" of the double airline credit one can get in the first card year (as the airline credit is calendar year).

I'm still currently Platinum (even though I did NOT make the 75K spend last card member year), so expect to stay that way through the end of December at least, and likely through mid February when Marriott resets their statuses.
I think that you're likely correct that January is the best time to apply since you'd keep the benefit through the end of the following year. Also as MD/DC flyer mentioned, you'll want to apply late enough in January that you've got some use for the $300 credit right away in case you ever want to cancel the card.

Price Protection
I just received my card packet today and was reading through the card benefits. I have AMEX Platinum, and I believe it had this same benefit...but I never really thought twice about it. It mentioned Price Protection and states you can file a claim for the difference in price of an item 90 days after purchase. My question is, nothing seems to say that I cannot buy something now that I see on a Black Friday ad and file a claim. Assuming there is no rebate involved (because it lists that as an exclusion). Has anyone ever done this before?
