If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Hello! Reading this thread has sufficiently freaked me out a bit regarding my own practices. I'm new to this game and I wonder if I could get some opinions about whether I'm at risk.

I have Freedom, Ink, Ink Plus, and Southwest Rewards.

Ink Plus is new as of Dec '14. For my business I spend a LOT on Amazon every year, which prompted me to start buying gift cards from office supply stores. Starting this month, I've been using Ink Plus for all general purchases as well, in an effort to make sure my spending is not exclusively gift cards. I estimate I'll be putting about $2000/month on the card in general purchases. My limit is 5k. I pay off my balance every month.

I'm wondering how much in Amazon gift cards I can "get away with". I had planned on hitting the 50k max (so approx 4k/month), but now I wonder if I shouldn't be a bit more moderate...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

So are you thinking 4 K in Office Supply spend? You could split that up between the Ink and Ink Plus, plus mix up your general purpose spend. Many here do more than that, but YMMV

Welcome to FT!

Don't know anything to add on the Amazon gift card situation. However, if you use TurboTax on your taxes, and get a refund, the last couple of years there has been an option to get a 10% bonus if you convert it to an Amazon credit. For example, if you have a $500 refund, you could get it as a $550 credit on Amazon. Don't know if they are doing that this year.

edited to add: TurboTax is offering a 5% bonus for online filing, and 10% for their downloaded software. Here's the link.

Thanks for responding!

I was thinking about using both cards, but again, worried I'd get flagged or something. I wish there were more concrete rules (as does everyone else, too...) I could easily hit the 50k limit on office supply points with Amazon gift cards, and I could hit the 25k for the ink card, too. But I don't know if 24k in other general spending is enough for Chase to feel like I'm valuable enough to not get rid of.

Really, I'd just like to get a general feel for what other people feel comfortable doing. If you were putting 24k in general spending on their cards, how much in gift cards would you feel comfortable buying?

Also, would buying gift cards to buy stuff on Amazon for my business (stuff i would definitely buy whether or not I had the gift cards) be classified by them as manufactured spending?

Sorry for your shut down.

But these numbers indicate that you spent over $93K in MS on your cards, plus $7000K in 5x categories and only $2000 (less than $200 a month if you only had one Chase card/ $70 ish a month across all 3 cards) on regular, non-repetitive purchases. Basically 90% of your spend was MS/cash equivalents.

I don't mean criticism, but I think if I were a fraud analyst, looking for such things, this would catch my eye.

Piggybacking on LivelyFLs work to identify account closures, I went a step further and outlined reasons identified for the closure.

The willingness to be forthcoming with details vary a lot by poster, so it's not possible to make any certain conclusions. But this was helpful for me as I refine my Chase strategy.

1 - moarmiles little explaination - 'inconsistent spending'
55 - brettskyg chase gift cards tiny ms
80 - Artemk checking chase gift card, tiny MS, international wires, wall-mart BP
108 - TTnc4me (105 actually) no info
117 - (not a closure)

232 - hitman1420 checking , heavy MS activity (no number)
235 - clearlyanewb checking, MS activity (10k AGC and more), light credit history, 10 recent inquiries
262 - brc01 - shortcycling, some MS (18k/month over a few cards), 1
272 - rambo - 70% MS on 5 cards, WM BP of 16k/month on 5 cards
281 - prestonv - heavy MS - 20k/month on multiple chase cards, heavy WMBP (ink stayed open)
326 - pacupgo - false alarm, no shutdown
364 - edh101985 - tiny MS (bonus only) , 4 chase cards in 6 months,

I was one of the first shut-downs 2 years ago and it had nothing to do with any of the above. After getting several cards and a high CL, Chase got an ARS or IDA report on me. There was an unfavorable neighbor remark on it. People think ARS/IDA are only problems with US Bank but Chase uses them too if your credit lines get high.

There is absolutely no benefit to keeping these reports open and everyone should freeze them a.s.a.p.:

Even though I had to sue Chase to get my points out, I've been able to start getting new Chase cards after 2 years.
What does an unfavorable neighbor remark mean? A neighbor complained b/c your grass was too tall?
