I still don't understand why CX deploys 74Js on the LAX route given the light loads from previous trip reports. LHR would be a much better destination as F/J are always full on the night flights. Does it have anything to do with payload restriction?

I don't know what flights you and Kchika are taking that are so 'empty' but I've done the LAX-HKG return CX flights in J over a dozen times in the last few years and have only had two sectors that were not full in J. Many, many people pay well over 5k for a J transpac flight.

I also have done a few LAX flights each year and have never seen J loads less than 80%

Not to pile on here, but I too have rarely seen a J cabin less than 75% full from LAX or 90% full from SFO over the past 8 years.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help on this matter about upgrading from Y-J. I managed to snag a bulk head seat in Y from SIN-HKG and HKG-LAX.
Hopefully they will not bump me out of the seat!

I think for LAX, there must be a lot more last minute business travellers (also interline codeshares with AA).
I do think CX made the correct decision in launching 3XLAX and won't be surprise it can churn upto 4 later.

When inquiring about an upgrade on the last leg of my trip, HKG-LAX, the gate agent said it would run about $24,300 HKD (~$3,100 USD) for the upgrade. Luckily I got a bulk head and was ok with that vs. spending the $$.

A point of differentiation that CX has is being quite fair and generous to OW members. But if they follow your suggestions then they would surely start to lose the business of these other OW flyers. So that would cause harm to CX just to satisfy a portion of their own frequent flyers.
I blame Cathay for this as it is only they who can put the pressure on BA etc to sort this out, unfortunately at the end of the day this just leads to a stalemate but as it is CX Diamonds have very little anyway and at least CX are making the gold members happy who could easily choose BA or other Airlines if they don't see the odd upgrade.

I guess they do this to attract customers from other airlines... whereas BA and AA thinks that they don't need customers from CX...
