I would not be surprise if this is the next airport (rather than DFW.) Northern Virginia, DC Metro, and surrounding Maryland are (Rockville especially) have TONS, and I mean TONS of Chinese people from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and various parts of China; also, a huge number of Koreans. I used to live in Northern Virginia for 8 years and that's a good 10 years ago and every time I would visit they told me there are more and more Asians in the area. While that area doesn't have a huge and distinct "Chinatown", but the East Asian population is huge. CX would be wise to do some market study there. That area has also a few of the US's top richest counties (like Herndon, VA; Chantily, VA), I can imagine it being a premium cabin heaven.

Who knows if the Ritz-Carlton folks at Chevy Chase, MD decide to fly with CX in F :P

Would this present range issues? JFK-HKG is listed at about 16 hours, could their 773's do another hour-ish without having to stop somewhere at full load?

Don't think so. I'm not an expert here, but I think the 777-300ER can do nearly 8000 nautical miles (a little over 9000 regular miles), maybe farther. A quick search on the internet shows Dulles to be considerably less than that...and on top of that, CX has their 777-300ERs configured in an extremely low-density layout. 77D has less than 300 seats. I'm sure there are plenty of variables involved but I think range should not be an issue.

CX EWR launch - the smokin' gun

Clickity
Cathay's NYC airport information now includes EWR, marked "effective May 2012"

this is indeed great news! and given the timings indicated and the location of previous BR flights I am guessing they will be flying out of the same concourse as BA hence using the BA lounge (which is anyway already open till 11pm). Won't be surprised if they give ground handling to BA as at JFK since BA has a strong presence at EWR.
There aren't many good lounges at EWR, at BA's isn't great but its pretty good relative to other options available at EWR.
They will probably also do some sort of pre-flight dining, at least for F.

All I can say is I told you so!!:p:D^

Another note, good to see the Asian presence build up at EWR. ^ I have heard a rumour that TG is thinking about launching EWR since they really have no use for those A345's. I'm not going to get into that since we're here for CX!!

CX is a far more stable airline that does serious homework before going into a new market. TG is more a fly by night deal (as was seen with their JFK service). I can with confidence say if CX chooses to go in somewhere, they usually stick with it and give a route time to grow and settle and have a longer term plan than many airlines. One of the best examples of this is MAA-HKG which was empty for the first few months but has really caught on.

CX.com now confirms the new port effective May (??) 2012.

An official announcement should be made shortly...

I doubt it, now with jet fuel climbing back up. Even UA/CO has downsized to a 738 on the HKG-SIN/SGN legs and having the 744s from SFO/ORD sitting here overnight (I guess cost of flying these birds outweigh parking fees at HKG). I have a feeling TG will park those A345s indefinitely or sell them even at a loss.

Lets not get into that. I didn't get into that since this is a CX forum not a TG forum. Cheers

Anyways, its good to see the NYC area as CX's largest market. Amazing how almost a decade ago or so, CX was not well known in NYC. Now, I think CX has the largest asian presence in the NYC market.

Anyone know of a publicly available database where I could find out how much connecting pax traffic there is BOS-JFK-HKG connecting to both CX and all carriers?

CX828 Dec 4, 2011 5:39 pm

I wonder if they will announce it today? Seems like it is to start from May not March, so not as urgent to announce it, although for ticket sales, it is always good to announce in advance.

What about Y+, there have been no announcements regarding developments and actual seat. It is also not available to book yet. Seeing as it is scheduled to be on some routes in March I think it is odd it still hasnt been announced....
