Book the shortest connection and let god sort the rest out. Even with a family. If your connection busts they'll put you on the next flight or the one after that or the one after that. Will probably be less than 4 hours. Don't force yourself and your family into an unnecessary long connection.

I noticed that AC has updated their MCT for travel this summer from International to Domestic at YYZ for certain airports the summer.

I've never seen this before, has this happened in past years?

happened last year too lol. except if this screenshot is from AC.com, i don't think they posted a date range last year. they definitely didn't specify for cities. there is specific discussion surrounding this MCT (NS2023) somewhere on the AC subforum

if you care about the discussion surrounding this happening in 2022, it'd probably be in a big thread on the AC forum that i simply don't know how to begin locating. i definitely posted about it, so you can also look in my post history but i don't know how to begin sifting through that as efficiently as an FT detective would

You might find this webpage helpful:

https://www.torontopearson.com/en/connections

If you have not already booked the trip, you might consider connecting within the U.S.: that would normally make for an easier connection.

Hi - You shouldn't have to if you are flying on AC and transferring to an AC flight to Vancouver. The bags should automatically be transferred and sent to your final destination. I'm assuming that your flight starts in PHL. I just flew LAS - YVR - YXE and did not have to pick up my bags in Vancouver (even though my layover was 9 hrs). You will have to clear Canada Immigration/Customs in YYZ.

Transiting through Torononto - time needed (customs, etc)

I have never done this, but if I am coming from Brussels through Toronto- onto the US (RDU) - the flight has 1 hr 40 min layover - do I have to go through customs/passport control/immigration and collect bags in Toronto and go back through security? Or is it just like a normal layover?

How much time should I plan as a minimum - FWIW I will have a four year old and 74 year old in tow - so running isn't an option.

Thanks!

Hi
Depending on time of day and number of flights, 1hr and 40min could be tight. Here is a link with connnection info from AC:
aircanadaDOTcom/dk/en/aco/home/fly/at-the-airport/airport-information/toronto-pearson-international-airport.html#/

as well as a link from YYZ for a connection *tool*
wwwDOTtorontopearsonDOTcom/en/connections

Hope this helps

If you're coming from Brussels, you will clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Toronto but will not have to undergo Canadian customs. You should not have to retrieve your bags which saves a ton of time. However, the wait at U.S. preclearance will depend on passenger volume and time of day. You will have to undergo security screening at YYZ as the U.S. does not recognize EU aviation security (Canada does).

T1 with AC/*A or T3? The answer might be different.

Thanks-I forgot Toronto has a US customs section- the only time I had been there previously was RDU to toronto to Rome - so it was treated just like any "regular" domestic layover if I remember correctly

thanks- even thou it is not on US soil, but it is USA preclearance - does TSA precheck get you a shorter faster line?

TSA precheck is useless in Canada. Nexus gets you to a faster security and customs line.

The last time I did an International - US transit at YYZ (pre pandemic) I used Global Entry to speed it up. Normal priority through all previous stops/checks. But by showing my GE card to the Canadian staff acting as the gatekeeper to the GE machines I was allowed to use the kiosks.

TSA PreCheck is only useful in Canada with regard to reducing the chances of being hit by SSSS and ending up subject to extra security screening. Otherwise useless in Canada.

Global Entry card gets faster security line with CATSA, faster line with US CBP in Canada, but not faster line with CBSA in Canada.
