I guess numerous flights to NYC have made me very annoyed with Toronto's largely useless subway.
There was construction started on a subway line to Renforth and YYZ that was cancelled when the Mike Harris Conservatives were elected (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eglinton_West_line). The subway tunnel was then back-filled. The same folks sold off highway 407 to a company in Spain. The funded plan for LRTs toward YYZ that was part of Transit City was stopped the day Rob Ford took office as mayor. These "visionary" politicians are against transit initiatives that are not their own.

Eglinton subway that Harris buried was only the first phase that only has 5 stops ending at York Centre, no where near Pearson. Even it was build, it would;ve ended up like Sheppard line today, a stub line to no where.

Eglinton LRT section west of Jane to Pearson was moved into phase 2 due to lack of funding. Unfortunately, phase 2 has been deemed a low priority so god knows when construction would start.

There have been studies about extending Finch LRT from Humber College to Pearson.

I agree with you about how transit plans change with each election and we never end up building anything but some of that blame should be directed towards voters who vote for the politician touting grandest transit plans with the most lines drawn on a napkin.

Yeah, but we won't have to worry about that for years.

I did not know this.

Data point: in Dec 2013 the YVR 7-11 didn't sell 10-packs, probably for this exact reason to avoid people avoiding the $5 extra.
I find that deceiving

so I bought $10 Day Pass instead since it's only slightly more expensive than $5+regular fare ($7.5 to downtown)?

simply too expensive for most commoners. Only the rich can afford it, or those that claim it under travel expenses.

$3 gets us from scarborough all the way to pearson via route 192. No way i'm gonna pay more for that. If 2+ people, door to door cab would be better/convenient

The value for me lies not in the price (which is too high but I can live with it) but the speed and reliability of grade-separated train.

I work near Union and this means I can leave my office 10 minutes before a train and know when I'm going to be at YYZ. The TTC is far too unreliable(and often crowded), so where I should be able to count on a 35 minute desk->YYZ trip, the TTC is 70-100 minutes.

note that UP will start June 6th

www.upexpresslaunch.com was giving out free tickets (1500 max) for June 6 Union-YYZ R/T only, but it's dead now

I noticed 2 online only fares now, for about $28 R/T

These two are the same price as the standard one-way adult fare. This is great the next time I have a connection in Pearson.

Looks like they are adopting a concept from other airport trains, HK AEx?
It is great for layover and downtown visit for visitors in transit.

Couple of weeks ago I took the Blue-Line L Train in Chicago, from downtown out to ORD.

When the ticket machine told me the fare was $2.25 I thought I'd pushed the wrong button.

Turns out back into Chicago from ORD it's a whopping five dollars.

Toronto Star covers Day 1

"At Pearson, its very easy to get from the train to your light. Either walk to Terminal 1, or take the free LINK train to terminals 2 and 3. But while the train is ready and willing to shuttle travellers, most "
http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2015...he-public.html
Getting "from the train to your light" is worth the price. Connecting to Terminal 2 - priceless.

I'm liking this as an option.
Luckily I'm not too far from Dundas West Stn/Bloor GO so this is super convenient for me for any early morning departures before the subway is running.

Not something I would take all the time mind you as I have a metropass but if you're not in a rush, it's super convenient.
