Yes, that is standard procedure for busy flights, and as indicated on the July thread, AGP services are running full, with BA seemingly not willing / able to run extra services. If it is the afternoon flight there are almost no seats left and a one way to AGP is £547 in EuroTraveller (not a Basic fare though!).
And indeed you can't use this facility to add to your Basic allowance, merely to check it in if you wish.

I don’t think they are particularly short as numbers are increasing . Experiences today that I’ve seen weren’t great no fast track either. I guess LHR and BA will monitor accordingly.

It's worth highlighting that the two catering specialists open are Prêt and the F&M bar by the South Lounges complex. The latter doing an at seat service. It's easier to buy diamonds than coffee.
EDITED to add: the places I noted still closed are: all the other catering venues such as Itsu, Pilots, Weatherspoons. Dixons, the larger WH Smith (but the downstairs branch is open), Travelex.

Unusually I got an email from BA about the tube being down this weekend, so definitely worth checking.
I'm reasonably certain I've finally worked out the TfL Rail times for T5, this is now a direct service and is a lot cheaper than HEX (£10.10 off peak, £10.20 peak and subject to the daily cap). Distrust other online sources! The move from T4 at zero notice caused a lot of problems for TfL Rail.
From Paddington - leaves 02 and 32 minutes past hour. HEX is 25 and 55 minutes past hour
From T5: leaves 21 and 51 minutes past hour, HEX 12 and 42 minutes past hour.
Hex takes 20 minutes, TfL takes 31 minutes.
